DIY: How to automatically restore a lost cable modem internet connection.
"After many visits, the cable company technician gave me his cell phone number as he left my house and said to call if anything changed. My problem with intermittent loss of internet connectivity (termed "Modem Flap" in the industry) could not be solved. I was trekking to a downstairs closet to manually power-cycle my cable modem once or twice daily and the process was getting old." This is the lead paragraph of an article I co-authored in MagPi. Feb, 2014, Issue 20. In it we describe using a RaspberryPi micro computer to sense the loss of my internet connection and then re-connect to the cable plant automatically without human intervention. The solution plays well here and may be useful elsewhere. If this sounds familiar, check out http//:www.themagpi.com for our solution. drjinsb4.3KViews0likes8CommentsModem Upgrade

Issue: Modem loses connection to the internet. Details: For the last two weeks, I have been losing connection to the internet almost daily. This occurs at random times. It has happened three times in one day, and has skipped a day. Resetting the modem always fixes the issue temporarily. I am on a wired connection. I have tested (with a cable tester) and switch the Ethernet cables used. When plugged directly into the modem, this issue still persists, eliminating the router as the point of failure. This also affects multiple computers and devices in the house. Troubleshooting thus far: First technician came out on Monday, February 3 rd . After testing the connection inside and outside the house, he determined that the issue was with the drop to the house. This was replaced. The technician also removed an amplifier and replaced the splitter that is in use. We only have one TV and a cable modem hooked up. Thus a two way splitter. When the issue continued to occur, Cox sent out a supervisor technician on Saturday, February 8th. He tested all of the wires and runs in the house, as well as the ones out in the yard. He determined that the issue was with something further upstream and escalated the issue to the network technicians. Today alone, the connection has dropped four times over a six hour period. Cox now believes that the issue lies with my cable modem. Someone will be coming out tomorrow to test the out the connection with a different modem. Below I’ve included the logs from the modem. Does anything in the logs offer any insight into what the problem may be? Given how many support calls I’ve made and how many technicians have already been involved, I’d like to get some additional eyes on this issue. Please let me know if there are any questions you may have about the troubleshooting that has been done thus far. For the last several months the wireless connection on my CG3000D is extremely unstable, regularly (constantly) dropping wifi connection to all devices (Android tablets and phones, Mac airbook, windows 8 laptop). There is no help from cox in terms of firmware updates that I can find outside of paying for a tech to come and do a paid service call. I purchased the Gateway/router from them and am now told that they don't support it. Tech Support informed me that I have to contact the manufacturer, which will only result in them telling me that only Cox can update the FW (as proven out on many forum posts here). SHe also told me that had I been lesing the box they would help, but since I purchased it is now my problem? WHAT? I am wondering how many people have this problem, how many have paid cox to fix it, which is likely a simple firmware upgrade? DOes anyone have a solution to this? Makes me want to go try DSL4.2KViews0likes3Commentsdownload speed (missing 20mbps!)
hi, i have the cox premier internet package. my download speeds are supposed to be at around 50mbps i would like to know why i am only getting 30-32mbps? i have tested this with 2 different routers ($150-$200) my current router is a net gear R6250 Smart WiFi router and my modem is a motorola surfboard model number SB6121, it's also a docsis 3.0 if that makes a difference. when the cox guy came out to install our service he had us test the speeds and it was only 31mbps and I've tested it about 20 times since then and its never been over 33mbps. he said that it may have to do with our coax cable which i think is some bs. i should not be missing 20mbps if I'm paying or a 50mbps service!2.1KViews0likes1Comment
