Re: Can I use my DVR box at my neighbors house who also has DVR service, so I can watch my recordings on their TV? Based on my past experiences with local and Cox cable power outages, when you unplug or lose power to the DVR you will not be able to play recorded programs until you have successfully rebooted and authenticated the DVR with Cox. You can watch recorded programs if Cox loses power but the DVR does not lose power. Something that may work but I have never tried: The steps below are probably a violation of the Cox terms of service and I do not recommend that anyone try them. You and the owner of the TV should understand that there are risks of equipment damage to the DVR and/or TV when following the below steps. Decide before starting who will pay for repair/replacement of the TV if it is damaged. * Moving the DVR while powered on or recording carries the risk of a hard drive crash that may result in the loss of all recordings and require replacement of the DVR. I am not recommending it. * Plugging in an HDMI cable with equipment powered on may damage either or both the DVR and TV. Static electric discharge thru an HDMI cable can also damage equipment even if it is turned off. I am not recommending it. 1) Plug the DVR into a charged battery backup then unplug the battery backup from the wall outlet. Turn on the DVR and let it boot and authenticate. Turn off the DVR. Disconnect only the Cox cable from the DVR. 2) The DVR may try to authenticate with Cox at each power on. Turn on the DVR, if you can view recorded programs then turn off the DVR and go to step 4. 3) If you are doing this step then the DVR authenticates during each power on. Reconnect the cable and power on the DVR. Let it reboot and authenticate with Cox. When booted leave the DVR turned on and disconnect the cable from the DVR. 4) Disconnect all DVR connectors except power. Very gently, carry the DVR and battery to your neighbor's home. Be careful when picking up or putting down the DVR if it is powered on. If the DVR is turned on it will be recording and be very sensitive to bumps. Turn off TV. Connect battery backup to wall outlet and DVR to the TV. Do NOT connect neighbor's Cox cable to your DVR. 5) Power off both TV and DVR and disconnect the DVR when finished watching recorded programs. Re: Don't ignore free equipment upgrade notice Update: Had only tested my desktop computer when I posted the above. This morning my wife booted her Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop (upgraded a year+ ago with an Intel SSD and this weekend with the $40 Win 8 Pro x64 upgrade). The Win 8 upgrade improved both her upload and download speeds. This morning she could not believe her wireless speed improvement from the modem upgrade. Her download speed (as tested with speedtest.net) has improved by about 15 Mbps and upload by about 2 Mbps. Her wireless download speed is now less than 1 Mbps compared to my wired connection and her upload speed is only a couple of Mbps less. I have a second desktop computer that I upgraded to Win 8 Pro x64 from Win XP Pro x32. Saw about 2 Mbps improvement in both upload and download speeds with Win 8. After less than a week had to RMA its memory. When I receive the new memory will post comparison between my XP Pro x32 and Win 8 Pro x64 Internet speeds after modem upgrade. P.S. If you are not upgrading to Win 8 because it lacks a start button, check out Classic Shell http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ , a free download that adds a start button and menus to Win 8. It works great. The $40 upgrade price to Win 8 Pro expires 1/31/2013 http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbpage.Windows_8_Pro?WT.mc_id=MSCOM_HP_nav_BuyWSoftware . Went to local MicroCenter to buy Win 8 Pro upgrade DVD. Have to ask for the upgrade. They are keeping them in the back of the store and I overheard the staff trying to sell a $200 Win 7 to a customer. After the sales rep handed me the Win 8 Pro upgrade box, I asked him if they would put the upgrade out after the price goes up $100-$150 on 2/1/2013. He just smirked. Don't ignore free equipment upgrade notice I live in Fairfax County Virginia. Got an email on Nov 8th from Cox subject "Important Notice! Equipment Upgrade Offer From Cox Communications." Upgrade was for Cox High Speed Internet & Digital Telephone modem. Called the number and the rep said that they were upgrading customers with old equipment and the new modem would improve upload and download speeds. The modem arrived today and I followed the instructions but could not get a dial tone or Internet connection with the new modem. After about 10-15 minutes on the line with Cox customer support, on a cell phone, the rep realized that the modem's serial number had never been entered into their system. He said that it should have been done before the modem was shipped. I ran some tests on speedtest.net. The chart of download speed showed about 3 Mbps faster than before but it was within a 2-3 Mbps range for the whole test. No evidence of Power-Boost in chart. Upload speed was just a little faster but varied across several tests during this evening. Download speed showed little variation from the max speed on all tests. In addition to the email, I have been seeing the upgrade notice over the bottom right corner of the first web page that I visited each morning. If you get the notice I suggest that you upgrade. Before you disconnect your old modem, call Cox support and have the rep verify that the new modem's serial number and MAC addresses are in the Cox system. Re: how do i get a new IP address ? Cox assigns IP addresses based on the MAC address of the device connected to the Cox Cable Modem. 1) If you have the Cox Cable Modem connected to a router then change the MAC address on your router, if possible. 2) If no router, then you have to change the MAC address of the NIC card to which the cable modem is connected, if possible. 3) Otherwise, buy and install a router that allows you to set the MAC address. Most do. After you change the MAC address then reset the Cox Cable Modem and you will be assigned a new IP address. Re: COX Designers - Advanced TV usability and functionality design BrittCox, If you want Directv features then you have to subscribe to Directv, unless Directv is willing to license their software patents to competitors at a very low cost, which would be a stupid thing for them to do. For Cox to copy Directv without the proper licenses would be a very stupid thing for Cox to do. We have Cox Whole Home DVR Network so skipping SD duplicate channels only had to be done once and it was propagated to all the boxes on the network. We found it worth doing. Re: Why does COX only offer the NASA Channel in SD? Oat, that is sad. It can't be because of a lack of interest in NASA and JPL in your area. Why does COX only offer the NASA Channel in SD? Why does COX only offer the NASA Channel in SD? Please add the NASA HD Channel.
