You can check the remote battery levels by pressing the Contour button, go to the settings icon and click OK, then go to preferences>remote settings. Also, does the light on the remote turn red when you press a button?

Thks..batt is @ 40% but the difficulty in starting occurs with both the Sony remote and the Contour remote. The white light that usually goes on the TV when the power button is pushed on either remote does not go on when the TV won't go on. Prob. not both remotes failing at the same time.

Have you tried repairing the remote to the cable box? This link will provide info https://bit.ly/3oLeNl3. You can also try reprogramming the remote to the TV using this link https://bit.ly/3Fv3MKU.

I agree, It reads like a problem with the TV but on even the oldest TV sets, IR sensors don't normally deteriorate. I suppose, like any other gizmo, sensors could wear out but I've never experienced it. Unless, of course, the TV recently took a good knocking.
If the Sony remote is also hit-or-miss, it appears to be the TV; however, if you recently changed something, light could be interfering with the remotes.
How long has this been happening? Is this a new setup?
