Cox mandates a cable-box...any cable-box...because Cox encrypts their TV content. To keep you renting, Cox only allows their cable-box to decrypt the data.
UPDATE: either a cable-box or a CableCARD (or a tuning adapter). I'm not sure which device...CableCARD or tuning adapter...you'd actually rent from Cox.
You're on the right track to stream, however, with a Roku!

Thank 4 the info.those little box is driving me nuts.it s Hayden to cut on..sometimes takes 75 pushes before it comes on.then it plays ar the last usedited volume level, which is too loud early in the morning, and volume doesn't react good as well maybe 7 pushes which
English is loud seems longerl...but after that, the volume functions first time, cuts off power on first pressl.but whenot I'm in a hurry to leave and can't find remote, the only wayou to cut it off is pull power cord,or climb up on a step ladder, and stretch to shut tv power,or look for both remotes ....ino power button on the cover box..Lin my basic version in the bedroom.just inconvenient...by saving a few cents on a button, they force me to rent it.and now I' have turned a little disgruntled after being a 25 year customer.we pay close to 400$ a month for cable, with no premium channels,or extras.just a direct box,and a nasic, and the highest level high speed Internet net, that always goes out and has never been high speed.seems a little high to me
By the way, don't by anything samsung,I've been ripped off by a beautiful fridge /freezer stainless ,lasted 5 days after warranty with many problems .rental loss.same with electric stove, less than 13 months .just out of warranty.and the countless g tab tablets,3,galaxy s5,galaxy note 3,note 4,note ,5,and the newest piece of junk the note 10 plus ....all exept.he he newest had charge port soldering weaknesses and some wouldn't charge at all.technition said their famous for using little solder so they will stop being charged so people get new phones...,.I'm done with them. Thank again 4 the help

Is your device the Mini Box? I didn't think Mini Boxes were designed to be turned off. I don't have a Mini Box but I thought it's designed to stayed powered 24/7.

Yes it supposed to stay powered but the remote is programmed to also turn off my widescreens tv.so my TV off button on the bottom is hard to reach from the way I mounted it,so is the electricle plug for the tv.but the electric plug for the box is lower down so it's easier to unplug it when I loose the remotes.the tv will shut off after a few minutes of inactivity...wish the box had an off button ato least

Okay...thanks. Renting a CableCARD is basically to record, right? I remember the concept of TV Tuner Cards back in the '90's but have since became ignorant of 'em.
