I have a desktop computer with an Ethernet port but it is too far away from the cable modem to connect it directly.
When I run speed test on the hardwired computer (connected to a Nighthawk switch and then to an Orbi router) I still only get ~450mbps...So, I'm thinking it isn't the laptop connectivity...

Remember...you should only do speed test directly wired to a modem. If you have a gigabit plan, you need gigabit hardware, cables and networking protocols. Meaning, no routers, air or dongles.
You may already be getting the true results of your measurements, but you should use the right equipment to get an accurate result.

Thanks, Allan, will do! Bruce, thanks for all of your feedback. My first goal is to figure out what speeds I am getting from Cox and out of my cable modem. I can then work on everything internal using the Cox speeds as my baseline.
