self install modem/router

I currently have Cox Contour and am attempting to self install my own modem/router.  I purchased a cox recommended modem, but I couldn't install it.  Called Cox and was told the modem would not work with my current Cox equipment and that I would have to replace it.  Has anyone else had this problem..

    What modem did you purchase?  Besides Contour, what "...current Cox equipment..." was the rep referring?
