If the previous modem also connected to a telephone wall jack, the previous equipment belonged to Cox. So no crickets necessary.
The tech should have replaced their modem in your house with a similar unit; however...and Cox will do this...the tech replaced with a 3-in-1 device (Panoramic) to force a rental fee.
Nice......So I just need to return the Panoramic and ask for what type of modem(?) or should I just go ahead buy my own?

Definitely return the Panoramic because you already have an operational router. If your router eventually breaks, you can replace it...not Cox.
I'm unsure why you can't cancel your telephone service. If you're locked into some type of bundled plan and cancel telephone service, your bill would increase due to your plan no longer being a "bundled savings" plan. However, your bill already shot up $25-50 so what difference would it make to just bust the bundle? It appears you are no longer saving any money.
If you want to keep landline service, the Cox Solution Store will replace your 3-in-1 device (Panoramic) with a freely loaned Internet & telephone modem (2-in-1 device).
If the Solution Store doesn't have a 2-in-1 device, the Solution Store will have to freely loan you the Panoramic because Cox cannot...by law...force you to rent equipment for telephone service. Congress busted up that racket back in the early 80s.
If you want to cancel telephone service, have your son pick an Internet modem from the link Mouth provided above.
