Ah, as Paul Harvey once chronicled: The Rest of the Story [is fiber]. This would be a different consideration.
First, if Cox is or will wire your neighborhood with fiber-optic cable, you need to determine where the fiber will terminate. There are expressions in the fiber world for this termination point: Fiber-to-the-[Neighborhood]-Node...Fiber-to-the-Curb...or Fiber-to-the-House. These termination points would dictate what equipment you'll need. The best scenario, Fiber-to-the-House (FTTH), would not require the traditional cable modem (DOCSIS). This scenario would require an Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
You'll need to research where the fiber cable will terminate in your area.
Yes, an ONT is to be put in. That I do know.

Fiber-to-the-House is good. Cox will install and connect an ONT. The ONT will be your Internet modem.
The device you purchased, CAX80-100NAS, is a combo device: modem & router. Its modem is DOCSIS 3.1. DOCSIS is technology for coaxial cable. You do not need a DOCSIS Internet modem. You only need a router to connect to the ONT.
Therefore, you do not need this device. I don't think it evens has a WAN port to connect to the ONT. You could probably use it deeper in your house to help distribute your WiFi but this unit is kinda overkill.
I don't know what ONT Cox uses or what connectors would be on the ONT, such as a coaxial connector, an Ethernet connection or both. Would Cox provide the make and model of their ONT?
