Users don't update modem firmware. ISP's such as COX strictly "push" firmware updates to supported modems. They don't want user firmware tampered with. I suspect the technician had other appointments to tend to so he gave you a ridiculous explanation so he/she could leave.
Anyways, I have my own SB8600 I purchased and I'm on the ultimate plan. With the last week or some I've seen considerable lag spikes when playing some games. Here's the current info for my modem:
Software Version 8600-6.1.1.19 (firmware)
Hardware version: 1.0
I don't recall what software version my modem started with nor do I know if there has been any changes to the software.
What does your modem currently show?
Karen_R can you look at my account as well?
OpenBSD have you done a recent speedtest? I'm curious to see if your speeds have degraded like mine have.

seper8tor I'm on the the ultimate tier not the gigablast so I can't test gigablast speeds. My speed tests are fine on ultimate though. Are you using an iPv4 or iPv6 address from Cox? Just curious. Anyways, I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to upgrade to gigablast or not but with the 1TB cap still in place I doubt it. I'm in Tucson Arizona FYI.

What speedtest are you using? I have just upgraded to Giga a couple weeks ago and my DL speeds have been horrible... I get like 987mbs on the web based speed tests, but when I try to pull down files from the Usenet my speeds are all over the place, bouncing around from 90 up to 300 constantly. At that rate it is barely saving me any time compared to the old 150mb plan I had that would stay maxed out without any hiccups. I read on another forum a user had proven that Cox unlocked the speedtest sites to full speed but was throttling known ports/sites that are used to DL large amounts of data: Newsgroups,torrents,etc... Whats the point if the only time I see max speeds is when I'm just testing :-/

I use this:
https://www.speedtest.net/apps/windows
I also use usenet and have not noticed any obvious throttling although speeds due vary at times. Right now it seems like my model modem has a speed cap of 300mbps despite having Gigablast. I just downloaded from usenet and it maxed out at that speed as did the speedtests.
Last week before "something" happened, I was getting close to 1000.

Huh... I wonder why I keep getting fluctuations... I have up to 30 connections and unlimited speeds from Giganews, I need to check my firmware tonight but that doesnt seem to have changed anything. 300 is about the max I have got up to now as well
