i appreciate the assistance and idea for sure. i will probably just end up attaching the external to a laptop i don't use, and share it on the network. otherwise i am not trying to set up all that extra FTB stuff that i don't need. I have not had good luck on reddit. all i get is a blank page when i click on a reply to read a post. and this IS a Cox related question because i am using their router. otherwise i would have posted my question some where else.
The fact that their routers don't have USB is what makes it NOT a Cox issue. I can see if they did have USB and you were asking how to use it, but that isn't the case It would be like coming here asking how to get cellular backup to work with a Cox router. I don't mind helping, but Cox won't be able to help. I really have NO idea why Julian even asked you to email them. I think they just copy paste the "We are sorry, please email us" response to everyone.

lets not get into a thing. the issue is a Cox issue. period. they supplied their machine. if i didn't have their machine i would have asked the question in a different forum. The first machine i had did have a USB port but it died and the tech person said i could use a USB to Ethernet adapter to connect my external to the network. unfortunately that was not the case after a few weeks of research so i came here to see if any one else had done it. Otherwise i don't appreciate your smarmy-a** commentary.

Wow, I am done helping you. You are rude and ignorant. Please leave now.

It's actually NOT a Cox issue. They will assist connecting computing devices to the ethernet, but most items past that require advanced support by the paid service Cox Complete Care.
I was advanced support (Tier 2, then CAG) for Cox, and I absolutely know what I am talking about. The connecting of an external hard drive to the router, whether it's via USB or Ethernet, is not a Cox supported issue. Even if the tech said get an ethernet to usb adapter, it's not something that Cox would support, if you bought one and it didn't work.
His answer to you was a factual answer, not a smarmy answer. Emailing Julian will take you to a recommendation that you sign up for paid service Cox Complete Care, and even THEN, they may not be able to assist.
WiderMouthOpen actually tried to provide you the best information possible, as have I. Take the info and do as you wish, but, WiderMouthOpen is owed an apology.
