Video Streaming

Video streaming quality has been lacking now for 5 days.   The first tech said low signal which proved wrong .. the next two techs wanted me to reset the modem which didn't work and fix cookies.   I should be getting smooth video play back.   I have had smooth video play back for years  my internet usage is not that heavy so I have the lowest tier as recommended by cox.  The internet usage has been slow and erratic.   Where is the quality I had 5 days earlier?

Hello Stormy456,

I can certainly understand your frustration with poor video streaming. There are several factors that can cause this issue. This includes bad signals, bad splitter, bad equipment, outdated equipment, the website that you are streaming from, and even the computer itself. My suggestion would be to send us an email to cox.help@cox.com with your full address and name so that we can research this issue further for you.

Thanks,

Allan

What tier do you have? The "lowest" varies from area to area.

Also what is your connection like? Wireless laptop? Wired desktop?

Last, what kind of streaming are you doing? Netflix? Youtube? HBO Go? Here is one site that will tell you general Youtube speeds in your area.

5 mbps download 1 mbps upload.    Streaming is Youtube but it also gets slow when when I open more than one window, or I play a game on facebook.  Up until 5 days ago I have never had any problems.

Saying it worked 5 days ago doesn't give any information about the problem. I guess email them as per moderator.

It says a lot - like how long the problem has been going on.  Day 6 now and streaming problem still exists.

I would suggest by starting with doing some speed tests on cox.net and see how your speeds are compared to your advertised service rates.  There  may also be benefit to trying some testing without the router to see if that is contributing at all.

I have done plenty of speed tests already.  I have been told by a cox tech that the signal is weak but have heard not much more on this.     The speed tests are ok.   I have tried a different computer and though the streaming doesn't screw up as much is still will hang.

Another possibility could be the quality of the streams.  Your provisioned rate isn't idea for the HD streams they are preferring to offer by default.  You could try seeing if viewing via a lower quality setting corrects the issue.\

All this time, my file checker was telling me that I had the latest versions of the programs needed to play back video.   This wasn't entirely true.   Seems Java 55 is the outdated version and I really should have had Java 60.    I deleted Java 55, rebooted and then installed Java 60.    Voila.     Video streams normal again.

Awesome, glad to hear the solution was that simple.

Odd since most streaming video sites I know use flash or silverlight, not java. Wonder why that caused the problem out of the blue. Curious in-case someone else has a similar problem.

I upgraded Java and reinstalled Flashplayer (part of google chrome).    And reinstalled Adobe AIr.    Then checked and noticed the change.
