I was looking at the details of my modem and saw that my telephony security is disabled. I was wondering why this would be? This is a huge security risk. Is it normal practice for cox not to secure its customers phone calls? Also what do I need to do to have telephony security enabled?

The risks of not securing phone lines over the internet are huge, as explained in this article http://cdn.ttgtmedia.com/rms/pdf/cisco_telephony.pdf

I understand your concern with your phone service. Our residential phone service is not the same as in your article. This article discusses setting up an IP Telephony Network. Going into how our system specifically works is proprietary information that is confidential.

I'd like to know the answer to this question too. What's going on? If my phone calls aren't secure perhaps I should look for a different provider.

Could you include a screenshot or exactly which security your talking about? Maybe they mean at the DOCSIS level? I can't see how it could be secured between modem and phone without the phone needing to be compatible.

The security setting option you are referring to is used to add the second layer encryption or basically a VPN for phone service. An example of the use of encryption is when you hear people say, “Is this line secure?”. The option will only work if both ends of the call has it enabled. If both ends of the call doesn't, the receiving end will only get noise.
Our phone service is the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) that is used mostly around the world for residential services. There are some differences when the call is actually on Cox's network however that information is propriety and confidential.
