speed test web page load error

When trying to use the Cox speedcheck, using either Chrome or Safari browsers, the webpage starts to load, then the menu bar is repeated several times (5 ot 6), then I get:

Bad Gateway

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.

Anyone else getting this?

Hi sunny sam, I re-checked and it appears to be loading fine. Please clear your browser cache, then close the browser, re-open the browser, login and try it again. Our speedtest is powered by OOKLA, so you can also run a speed test from: www.speedtest.net

I tried www.speedtest.net and that works fine.

Then I try again https://myaccount.cox.net/internettools/speedcheck/speedcheck.cox and the problem remains.

Just tried using Firefox (which I believe I have not used before to get to the Cox tools) - get the same problem.   I doubt it's a web page cache problem if all three browsers get the same problem.

Hi sunny sam, any Java updates on your PC recently?

Nope.   I use OSX, and according to Software Update the last Java update was many months ago.

I am able to use http://www.cox.com/residential/internet/speed-test.cox .

However, still cannot load properly https://myaccount.cox.net/internettools/speedcheck/speedcheck.cox .

Thanks.

What results did you get from the speed tests that you ran?

It's been several days now, but when I run the test at http://www.cox.com/residential/internet/speed-test.cox the results did not surprise me but seemed typical to what I always get.   I just ran it again and got 25 megabits per second, thus a bit over 3 megabytes per second, for download.   Upload is one fourth that.

Well, the price just went up again, on the bill says "Preferred Internet Service".  The modem is  a Motorola SB5120, which I bought from Cox several years ago.

It may be a good idea to replace that modem, and for a couple of reasons.  You will get faster speeds by replacing that modem with a Docsis 3.0 modem.  The issues you are seeing could be a direct correlation of the older equipment you're using, so that could correct those problems as well.  Here is a list of modems that are compatible with our service - http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=b2ec95d0-7ef9-11df-5590-000000000000.

Thanks for the list of modems but I am not sure that is the problem.   Cox still advertises that it is compatible with the DOCSIS 2.0 modem I bought from them.

Starting about a week ago I have been able to get the original link to work that I had previously been giving me problems ( https://myaccount.cox.net/internettools/speedcheck/speedcheck.cox ).

Something else also changed a couple of days after I started this thread: some previous problems with dropped service improved.   For months I have had the problem where the COX ISP would disconnect, then a few hours later is would work fine.   Since I started this thread it has worked better, but just yesterday I started having problems again.   It seems to occur fairly regularly on the weekends.  Sometimes the throughput is just throttled, sometimes greatly, sometimes only partially.   The current speed test is this:

Start
 Cox
Net
Download
Speed
Upload
Speed

Latency
Your IP
Address

Cox Market
Sun Apr 5 5:01 PM Yes 13 Mbps 5 Mbps 19 millisec 72.192.147.222 San Diego

Thanks for looking into this.

As an example of the erratic nature of the throughput, here is the test results a few minutes later:

Start
 Cox
Net
Download
Speed
Upload
Speed

Latency
Your IP
Address

Cox Market
Sun Apr 5 5:10 PM Yes 4 Mbps 8 Mbps 27 millisec 72.192.147.222 San Diego

At times the download speed and upload speed slow down to the old telephone line rates of 19.2k !

Hi TiffanyR,

Thanks for working on this.

I am using a wired connection, straight from my Mac to Motorola box, which is connected to the coax cable from Cox.

For several months now my bandwidth has had periods of great variability, and several days a week I seem to get almost total dropout.

@sunny sam

With a DOCSIS 2.0 modem you are provisioned for speeds up to 32Mbps however because it is only a single channel modem consistent speeds should not be expected.  I'd suggest upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem which would also upgrade you to 50Mbps speeds at no additional charge and see if that helps.

Once again, the issue is not that I'm not getting the 50MB/s peak download speed (which I'm not, but that's not the real issue.)

The problem is that my connection is very intermittent and drops constantly.   In the past few days I can't keep a connection for more than a few seconds during the day and evening.

When I use the OSX Network Diagnostics during these times, it will often show the ISP as not responding even though the ethernet and network settings are fine.

That's why when I run Speedcheck the results are so variable.

For example, it took me almost 15 minutes to post this reply because it takes that long for the full page to load.

Please do something about this.

thx.
