Slow Internet

I currently pay for internet preferred package of 50mbps. Speed test says I only get 10mbps. I have the Motorola SB 6141 which is a compatible modem but I have read that outdated firmware can be the cause of the slow speeds. How can I check to see if this is the case?

Do you have a router?  If so what model?  Is the 10Mbps connected direct to the modem?  While modem firmware could cause problems, it is a low probability.  We must look at your entire network to troubleshoot.

Yes I have the Apple AirPort Base Station. Yes I tested the speed directly to the modem also and it was around 10mbps.

When was the last time you tested without the Airport?  I don't see any recent changes in connections reported by the modem.  Also with the Airport you'll probably need to disable IPv6 on the Internet connection settings to make the connection stable.  This can be done by setting the IPv6 setting to link-local only.

That kind of tells you the problem is with your Apple router... does it not? What more help do you need?
If you get your full speed while connected direct to the modem, then the issue is not on Cox's end.

chris_c21's response is essentially correct.  If the speeds are good without the router the best thing we could do at this point is refer you to Apple Care for further assistance with that part of the puzzle.
