Slow internet speeds in Gainesville,Florida

Hi,

I am having issues with internet speeds usually at night after 8. Speeds have been slow during this period for a month now. Cox tech had a look at Signal levels and everything looks fine according to him. Speeds start dropping after 8 and sometimes go as low as 100kbps. Its been frustrating dealing with these speeds and calling support nearly 4-5 times a week and reaching no resolution. I have no idea what to do now that Cox tech said that there is no issue in signal and line at my place.

Thanks.

I don't see any indaction of problems with that you have posted so far.  Can you try without the router to see if that makes any difference?

The results i posted are without a router. Speeds stay fine until 6-7 hovering around 10-12 mbps, but there is huge drop off after 8 pm continues till 12:30 am. Cox tech support guy said that everything looks good on physical side. From they way speeds vary i feel this is a congestion issue, lot of people using at peak time. same thing happens during weekends day and night.

Speed test at 7:25pm :

Speed was 12mbps when i tested at 5:45pm. All done with no router. Speeds keep going down till 10-11 when it hits miserable 800kbps - 1mbps.

I am having exactly the same problem since the last 2 weeks. I am in the zip code 32608. The internet is basically extremely slow and  unuseable after 8 PM to very late in the night. Even simple web pages take a minute to load. I checked the speed with speed test and i am consistently getting 0.4 mbps today. and ping time over 200 ms.  I am seeing others post exactly the same problems from around 32608 so i know there is really something going on in this area's connection.  I am going to call the technical support tomorrow and see how this can be resolved. The tech support needs to come and verify the connection at night after 9 PM to see the problem. Everything is hunky dory during the day when they usually come.

Hi,

Its getting worse everyday. Today at 9 pm i was getting 200kbps DL. i was unable to open Cox website to post Speed test Screenshot. Its basically unusable at night. I live in 32608 Zip code too. Latency is horrible at night hovering around 200-300 ms. I wish some one would take a look at usage at night and see if its a congestion issue or something else because I see it happening a lot around here.

I would like to confirm what everyone else has been posting. There are some serious issues in the 32608 area at night. It has been going on for at least a month. I was hoping this would work itself out so I haven't bothered to complain until now. The internet is great early in the day. Unfortunately I am gone most of the day and from 7pm-12 is when I actually need the internet to work. I am on the premium internet and if I do a test at 8am I will get 20MBps down and 7MBps which I am happy with. After 7 or 8 pm everything starts to slow down. It becomes noticeable around 9 or 10. By the time you reach 11 it is almost unusable for anything beyond browsing basic webpages and by midnight it grinds to a complete stop. Last night at midnight I couldn't even load google! From speed tests I can see the internet going from a great 20+MBps during the day to 0.01MBps at night or even worse. I would really like this to be looked into (have someone check it late at night when the problem actually exists). It is not a problem with modems/routers since so many people have this. It is a problem with congestion and something that needs to be worked out from Cox's side. Almost all of my internet use is late at night since I work all day. It doesn't make sense for me to pay for premium speeds when I get dial up speeds during my primary use at night.

1st thing I would do is document your speeds. Example being  record your speed tests with a digital camera if you have one. Write your speeds down. Make sure you call Cox billing dept. so you can have poor internet service deducted from your bill. If a tech has been to your home and everything inside has checked out ok then its a issue that Cox networking engineers need to solve. Your problems are very solvable but you have to stay on Cox. Document, call weekly and let them know what is going on. Ask them to do a node split in your area. They won't like hearing this brought up but from what you have posted here that's the problem. Google internet node split and you'll get an idea of what is going on. I've been through this scenario more than once. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, glasshead. Curious enough the speeds seem to be good now at night (at least for the past 2 or 3 days). They were terrible for a month until I decided to post about it on the forums and a couple days later everything is fine. I will keep my eye on it and see if it is better for good or if it goes back to how it used to be.

I would like to confirm that I am also in the 32608 zip code and I am experience exactly the same problems. After around 8pm, or on weekends starting around 1-2pm, my speeds drop off into the kbps range, and pings exceed 200-300+. I have spoken to Cox technical support and I have gotten the same unhelpful responses that others have posted here. I am paying for MUCH higher speeds.

The internet is barely usable, nevermind trying to play games or stream content when it gets like this. They offered to send out a tech for a fee (laughable excuse for a company). I will be cancelling my service as soon as the DSL people get our house hooked up.

Cox needs to get itself together, this service is outrageously awful.

I guess I spoke too soon. My Internet has been terrible again at night. I am having to use my phone right now because the forums won't even load with the Internet speeds on my computer. Does the cox staff even look at these forums??

i don't know what we can do at this point. I stopped calling them 10 days ago, it is tiring calling them and explaining that there is no issue locally with my computer and spend 15-20 while they reset the router and still have the same problem. Tech came here 4 times and said there is no issue physically he can find and suggested may be we should replace all the wiring in the house, even though issue happens only at night and on weekend, some how wiring is bad. I am reluctant to move to AT&T because they are in process of phasing out DSL services and i don't trust them providing a better service.

And there is no response here in forums, i think there is a need for node split and cox is avoiding it. they know that there is no comparable alternative and they just don't care if service is ***.

I live in Georgia, and I am having the same Slow Internet problem. I have called and complained, they always do a test and say that everything looks good. Well it's NOT. They sent a tech out to check and he determined that there was a problem. He repaired the problem for a short time, but now it is worse than ever. It does no good to call Cox and report the problem, because they just keep saying they are aware of the problem. I do know that they have started "throttling" people that use to much bandwidth here. The tech told me about this when he was here. I haven't seen anything about this from Cox, as for informing the customers/suckers. The tech said that it doesn't matter what level you have and there is nothing the consumer/sucker can do to avoid it, except not go over a certain amount.

He did not come out and say this, but did not tell me that I was wrong, when I said they are doing this to make those that are watching T.V., and using things like Netflix streaming instead of buying cable T.V. from Cox. So if you are using just the Internet to watch your T.V., they are trying to find a way to force you to get cable.

I have had consistent cable and Internet problems for 4 years now. It took me a little over a year of calling every week complaining about my service, before they ever repaired the first problems I was having. They promised me a credit for the time I was having the problem, but three years later and I have YET to get a credit. During that first year of complaining, I was paying for Internet from Cox, but actually picking up my connection from another home in my neighborhood. I was not aware of that until they finally determined the problem was coming from the Box that the cable lines enter the house from. I am still trying to get my credit, but they seem to have lost all information about me ever having a problem. My cable has been screwed up going on 6 months right now, and they still can't find the problem, but assure me that I will be credited for the time it has not worked correctly, AS SOON as they fix the problem. SIX months!! I pay $200.00 a month for cable and Internet. This is not fair, but what can we do?

I don't see anything going on from this end that would impact your speeds.  Do you  have QoS configured on your router?  Can you try without the router to see if there is any difference.  Have you done any speed testing to see what you're actually getting compared to your subscribed rate of service?

ChrisL,

It is people like you that are the problem! There are multiple people in this thread complaining about the exact same problem. We are all experiencing drastic slow downs during peak hours. The slow downs are so bad that our internet becomes barely usable.

Yet, every time we call, email, or post here, we get the same useless response from you. You say that everything looks good from there. Well let me tell you something ChrisL, it is NOT good. There IS a problem. I don't care what tests you are running from "your end" but you are not testing the right thing.

To answer your above question, I run speed tests all the time. I get less than 1Mbps download consistently  That is with multiple different speed test sources, including Cox's. It makes no difference whether or not we use a router. It makes no difference whether or not we restart our modem. The problem is Cox's, NOT ours.

This support is a joke. Complete lackluster abilities of a forum moderator that hasn't a clue how to solve our problems. Guess what ChrisL, there IS a problem, and you can check modem signals all day and night, and it isn't going to solve it. This is a network issue, a WAN issue, a node issue.

For the sake of all your customers, get it together man.

I'm "glad" to see that 32608's connection still sucks. As now, (just 5pm!) my net is horrible and I got
