Signal Strength

Is there a way to determine the signal strength at the cable box?

I have been experiencing some stutter and blackouts on Epix, Encore, TBS and some others in the last several weeks.

My cable is split at the entrance with one side to the main tv and the other to the internet modem and an analog tv.

There is a 15 db amp inline with the main tv cable installed by Cox a few years back.

All the channels on the analog tv are fine.

Could it be the cable box itself?

What is the model number of your box? Some firmware diagnostic sections report signal strength. I believe Cox can check it remotely. Ask at cox.help@cox.com

What kind of splitter is it? If the leg to the modem is the same to the cable box, then they should be equal. You can see the signal levels of the modem at 192.168.100.1. If the signal levels look good on the modem, you could then move it to the outlet that the cable box is on. If the two were different, then it would tell you the problem.

Other then that, you would have to go into the diagnostics of the cable box, which depends greatly on the kind of box and software. See question in Domino's post. Also, I can confirm Cox has some way of checking this remotely. I believe the newer boxes even have a integrated tuner that they can see via some of their data tools.

The Cable box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4240 HDC.

Tiffany,

Thank You for checking that!  I am going to have a tech come out as the splitter is the original one installed by Cox. The run to the main TV was quite long so he added the inline amp.  Everything has been working great up until a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks again for your help  :-)

Gary the tech just left.  Excellent service!  He replaced the original splitter and some connectors.  He also added some "gizmos directly to the cable box.  Went from a +15 down to a +5.  All is well.

Thank you again for your support!
