Is the position of the telephone modem significant for the telephone to operate properly? For example, can the telephone modem be placed out-of-the-way (and out of sight), under a couch? Does it need to be out in the open similar to a wireless modem?

The phone modem is not wireless in anyway, so it can go anywhere you want (within reason) you can get the required wires to it. For instance, if you stored it under your couch, you would need to run a cable cord, phone cord, and electrical cord to under the couch too. This is assuming your modem is just a phone modem, and not a phone/internet modem, because then you would need to feed a Ethernet under the couch too. Last, the modem produces heat, so it requires proper ventilation. That would depend on the clearance of your couch, or where ever you planning on putting it.
