Is it a Motorola? What is the DVR model number?

More than likely a noisy HDD, or possibly a noisy fan. If noise persists when DVR is switched off, it's the HDD. There is a menu setting to have the HDD powered only when the DVR is switched on. To see if it's the fan, UNPLUG DVR until it is very cool. Then, plug in and turn on. If the noise doesn't start until the DVR gets warm, it's the fan.

Just in case its something simple, I suggest making sure the DVR is well ventilated and not to hot. I think the fan has a temperature probe, so if the case or drive is hot, the fan will spin faster.

Thank you for your help. I will try unplugging it as you suggested. If that doesn't work, can you tell me where I would find the menu setting.....is that on the device itself, or something I access via my computer?

Thank you for your suggestion. The DVR is elevated, and open on all sides, so I don't believe heat is an issue.
