I have ordered a new Smart TV and wonder what I will need to operate it. Since it will be HDTV will I need a box?Right now I am just hooked up through my DVD player. Does my DVD player have to be HD too? If I will need some HD box, can it just be delivered to me?

You don't need high-definition equipment to use a HDTV set. As Chris mentioned, you can connect anything to your TV as long as it has matching connectors. For example, you can connect a VCR to your HDTV if your HDTV set has RCA connectors (yellow, red and white cables).
Clarification for DVD players. First, there was VHS tapes...then DVD...now Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray is the only HD format (1080 lines to build an image on your screen). VHS and DVD have under 500 lines. So, technically, there is no high-definition DVD format, so you can't buy one. All DVD players are Standard Definition...or "low" definition.
Clarification for Smart TV. A Smart TV only means the TV has an Internet connector, either WiFi or LAN. That's it. With an Internet connection, you can download and install widgets or applications to your TV. There are widgets to watch YouTube videos, purchase stuff on Amazon or rent movies. Since Smart TVs don't have fully capable browsers, like on your computer, you need to install separate widgets for each service (YouTube, Amazon, Netflix). There are web browsers you can download as a widget, but those have very limited capabilities, such as no Flash Player or compatibility with a keyboard and mouse. A TV doesn't need to be Smart to be an HDTV.
What do you want to watch? If there are over-the-air TV signals in your area (antennapoint.com), you can connect an antenna directly to your HDTV. If Cox, or another provider, offers a basic package containing only local channels, you could possibly connect the coaxial cable directly to your digital TV. However, most cable providers scramble their signals to force subscribers to rent a box. If you already have Internet service, you won't need cable TV service because there are lots of Internet-based providers.
Tell us what you want to watch on your smart TV.
