More reliable POP server?

Several times per week (sometimes several times per day), I get a timeout trying to receive mail from pop.cox.net.  It seems to happen on both Outlook (on my desktop) and my Android phone at the same time, so I assume it's server-side.  Sometimes I can hit send/receive and it goes through the second time.  Sometimes I give up and when I come back later, it's working again.

I like storing email offline, so IMAP isn't really an option.

Is there a more reliable server that pop.cox.net?

Thanks

What ports are you using? 110 or 993? I think part of the issue is if your using 993, the authentication server becomes backed up. Or maybe it's the revesed. Haven't played with Pop3 enough to find out, but there seems to be some connection.

Also, you can still store email locally with IMAP.  Just FYI

It was on port 995, using SSL.  I'd prefer encrypted of course, but I'll try unencrypted on port 110 for a while just to see if it clears up.  Thanks for your help

Oops. I meant 995. 993 is IMAP. The incoming isn't as important as outgoing (SMTP) being encrypted because the password is SENT to the server. Also, if your looking for security, you may want to use IMAP instead, which uses TLS by default, the upgrade from SSL.

If you need to use POP3 you'll see this prompt if more than one device tries to access your mailbox at the same time.  Because POP3 requires exclusive or single user access to the mailbox you'll need to coordinate it so that other devices don't also try to access your email at the same time to completely eliminate these warnings.  Otherwise you can usually just click through and try again.

I did not consider that. Thank you for the info and correcting me so I didn't misinform the OP.

Any conflict if multiple devices are trying to access the same email account on different standards? Like if your PC is set to POP and your phone to IMAP? I know that did cause problems on the CB side, so always wondered if it caused issues with Residential.

Because POP3 locks the mailbox during download IMAP clients would also see the username/password error because they cannot access the mailbox.  In short, if *any* POP3 devices have an active session no other devices may initiate a session during that time.

It's unlikely that is the problem because my phone and tablet are set to manual sync.  Those are the only two other devices with my email configured.  Occasionally I'll attempt to refresh the email on my phone when Outlook is giving me problems, so maybe that's why the phone fails after Outlook, though.

More than likely on the phone side if that's what you're doing.  On the PC I would also suggest trying to disable any email scanning to see if that helps.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you! I love learning stuff.  I mean I kind of knew that, but it wasn't clear in my head until you said that. Thanks!
