Here's a list of Cox approved cable modems: http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=b2ec95d0-7ef9-11df-5590-000000000000
Yes, make sure you get a DOCSIS 3 modem. If you are comfortable working with router settings, I recommend getting a separate modem and router. You will have more flexibility. The gateways are good for someone who wants Cox to handle most of their network and only needs minimum configuration ability.
I recommend a separate router with gigabit Ethernet ports and at least 802.11n WiFi. ac WiFi is a plus, if your budget can handle it, especially if you have devices that support ac.

Hi Carrol,
Thanks for asking a great question! Buying technology in today's day and age can be quite daunting for all of us. The Cox Support article that Allen provided--Cox Approved Cable Modems--is the best place to start gathering information. Please let us know if we can help with any other questions!
Allen, thanks for your terrific input today!

There must be a reason ... please give us something to go on. What make/model modem do you have? What is causing you to reset it? Do the lights on the front change when you have to reset? As many details as possible will help in getting suggestions.
