Missing some HD channels?

So I've finally gone and purchased a tv manufactured this century. I'm able to find some HD channels but not all.  For instance, according to the "My Channel Lineup" page I should be getting Discover HD on 1024 and NESN HD on 1056.  The scan the TV performed on setup did not find either of these, and typing the number in directly doesn't work either.

I've confirmed that I'm subscribed to the TV Essential package, which does include these HD channels, so that's not the issue.  Is the problem that I'm connecting my TV to cable the way I always have, with the coaxial going directly into the television?  Do some of these channels require a separate cable box to receive?

Your TV digital tuner cannot tune channels in 10xx area. They require a cable box from Cox, as in give me some more money.

Those channels are digital essential channels and do either require a digital set top box or a cable card to view.

Not entirely true. In my area, I get ClearQAM HD channels 1005, 1006, 1007, 1008, 1009, 1010, and 1011 just fine with my cable plugged directly into the TV. These are HD versions of my local stations. It's the encrypted signals that the TV's QAM tuner cannot tune.
