Mini Box Blues

I upgraded my TV package to the Advanced TV the end of October in the belief that I would be able to receive more channels on the mini box, since I only received 36 channels on it when I first got it and out of those 36, I watch NONE of them. I called customer service multiple times and it seems that every person I talked to had a different answer to my question as to why I was receiving only 36 channels. I received a reply on the last forum message I started, saying that they had found an issue on their end that might have been the reason why I was only receiving those 36 channels and that I should to a channel scan again and see if that helped. Of course, I did not change a thing. I was then told that once the conversion to all digital took effect, that I would receive more channels.. So, I unhooked the mini box from my tv, since the channels I watch regularly still played on regular cable.. Sadly, I woke up this morning to find all channels have now gone digital, so i hooked up my mini box and... Still only get 36 channels on it and still, none are ones I watch. I have a bunch of local channels, a jewelry channel, multiple CSPAN type channels, several spanish channels and some channels that say property channels. When I try to view one of my regular channels, it says I have to have a subscription... A SUBSCRIPTION?? Why do I need a subscription on one television to watch the same channels that I already get on the other television?? I asked on several occasions when I spoke to someone in customer service if the mini box could receive the channels I watch or did I have to pay even more money for a different receiver and it was almost an even 50-50.. Some said the mini box was fine, others same I needed another receiver.. I am about fed up and ready to find a new tv/internet provider...

What channels are you missing?  Are they channel 100 or above?  For the most part, the minibox only receives channels below 100.  Please post a few examples of what you are missing.

I get most of the channels between 3-18, 23, 88, 96, 97, 99, 6 channels between 113 & 127, 141-143, 195, 899, and 1960-1965.

Gigiboo76,

The minibox will not give you the same channels as an Advanced TV receiver. It is meant to provide you with the same channels you would have gotten without the box (direct connection from the wall to the TV). It will also give you a guide, parental controls and Music Choice but you won't have the same channels as the ones included on the Advanced TV receiver. If that is what you're looking for on additional TV's an upgrade to Advanced TV is required.

Before the mini box, I was getting channels 2-10, 23-70 and 3 channels in the 90's, now I only get 36 channels which I mentioned in a previous reply, and I do not get the Music Choices that you mentioned.  I only watch the channels that fall between the 23-70 channels and now I am not getting them. They say I need a subscription to them but if they are included in the Advanced TV bundle I am paying for, why do I need a subscription to watch them on my mini box?

Hi Gigiboo76,

If you have an HD-capable television connected via a Cox mini box, you will be able to view TV Starter and TV Essential channels in High Definition. When you have a minute, please unplug the power to the Mini Box receiver and check the coax connections. Is there a splitter attached to the coax between the wall and modem?

There is a splitter in the living room but my issue is in the bedroom. That cable comes directly out of the wall.

Hi Gigiboo76,

The coding on the equipment is where it should be for the equipment. I'd recommend unplugging the power to the Mini Box for 20 seconds and await the reset to complete, and perform another channel scan. If these steps performed haven't cleared the error messages to the Essential Channels in the lineup, we can schedule a technician appointment. You may call our 24/7 technical support, or we may arrange an appointment. Please email us at cox.help@cox.com with this forums link, so we may track the history, and schedule the appointment for you.

Ok, so I did as you said and completely unplugged my mini box from the power source AND the cables. After about a minute, I hooked it all back up and did a channel scan... No change. I unplugged it all again and looked in the back of the box hoping maybe it had a reset button but it didn't. I saw the switch on the back that changes the required TV channel between 3 and 4. I switched it to 4 from 3 , plugged it all back up and that worked for some reason. Thank you for your help.
