Intermittent network stalls

Hi all,

I'm a software developer who works from home. Over the last few months I've been experiencing some issues with my consumer Cox Internet cable connection.

Occasionally, while browsing the internet, some pages will never completely load. There will be page assets (images, scripts, etc.) that never download. If I encounter this, and immediately force reload the page, everything downloads just fine. If I immediately switch to my VZW hotspot, the page downloads just fine.

Always, while communicating with a server via SSH in which the connection goes quite (no traffic is sent from my computer on the Cox network) while waiting for the server to respond (a long running command for example) the connection will go down. The response from the server, never makes it to the client. If I switch to my VZW hotspot, I can do the exact same thing without issue.

Speed tests and ping times are all good. I've rebooted my router and modem, tried different routers, and tried different computers. None of my changes within my home seems to improve the issues I'm seeing.

I'm getting better connectivity from my wireless cellular device than my hard wired cable connection? WHAT?!?!?!

Does anyone have and advice on how to further troubleshoot what is going on? I'd like to avoid calling into Cox's tech support without hard evidence that there is an issue with their network.

First thing that comes to mind is a DNS issue. If the page isn't loading, and a CTRL+F5 fixes it, its either a PC issue (which you ruled out) or a DNS issue. Thats because when you do CTRL+F5 it actually does another HTTP request for that domain direct from the source. That bypasses your computer temporary files, local DNS cache, and ISP DNS cache.

As for the server, usually SSH will a timeout period that will severe the connection when it senses its been idle too long. I am not a expert, but I am pretty sure this is a security measure enabled (and adjustable) on the server. Are you saying when the connection goes idle you are disconnected? Or does the disconnection happen first, causing your connection to go idle?

Also, you never said if you have tried going direct to the modem. Some router problems can be configuration issues, so swapping the router, without finding the possible configuration issue, doesn't truly isolate it. You might also want to try some tracert while using Cox vs VZW and see if you can get direct data on the possible issue.

When I noticed the ‘headline’ of your problem, I immediately thought of my own.  However,  my problem occurs on wireless devices, and I don’t know if it also occurs on my wired connections:  I haven’t noticed, but I don’t do the intense type of work that you do.

I listen to internet radio on Network Music Devices (‘radios’) and about early July I noticed frequent freezes in the music on various music url’s/various stations on devices from two different manufacturers.  Freezes last 2 to 5 seconds, typically.  These devices do show, at certain times, that they are buffering the signal, but when these freezes occur, they don’t register that they are rebuffering.

I’m in the Escondido Cox area.  As further asides, these devices aren’t too fussy; all of the ones that have frozen have full bar wireless reception; have been in use for several years, never a previous problem.

deedubaya,

if you have a chance, check this forum thread:  http://forums.cox.com/forum_home/internet_forum/f/5/t/1701.aspx

these complaints might sound familiar!

Yes...been happening for a while now.  Contacted Cox tech support and ran through the usual (problem must be on your end, connect directly to modem, reboot, software check), but I do this for a living and have 50+ clients in Gainesville, FL who are having the same problems.   Basically followed instructions, disconnected my WIFI router, test using just my computer and cable modem (same problems), and swapped my cable modem twice with two other units I own (same problems).  What is really interesting is I have a close associate who runs his office in Gainesville, FL about 30 miles away from my home located in Newberry, FL, and he is having the same problem exactly with completely different hardware, cable lines, and computer systems.

These problems are not local to our community, they do not relate to our own systems and lines to our homes, and sending out a engineer who will only replace the cable lines that transmit from the Pole to my home will not resolve these issues.  Cox needs to step things up and I suspect all of this relates to the 50% layoff of engineers Cox Cable has let go over the last 4 years.

Thankfully, Fiber is now in town and I'm looking for other optoins! Sorli...

What you guys are doing is called thread hijacking. Its when you invade a thread with information that is not relevant in order to draw attention towards your thread. If it is not against forum guidelines then its just plain rude. Either give technical advice relevant to the original post(OP) or do not post in someone elses thread. Thank you
