DVR issues

I have and Advanced TV HD DVR Receiver that is giving me issues. Unfortunately, I cannot give the exact model number. My Cox account lists three receivers, none of which is designated as the HD DVR and the receivers listed do not match the list of receivers I see when I look at the receivers available. Here is my list of issues: 1. About a year (or more) ago, we started experiencing a black bar down the middle of the picture when we were watching recorded programming. It keep the black bar until we unplugged the receiver and let it reboot. We finally had to replace the DVR. 2. About a month ago, we started experiencing some more issues. We would be recording shows and watching a program that was already recorded. It would come time for the evening news and we would switch from watching recordings to live TV. It would go to the channel and immediately the picture would black out entirely. The way to correct it was to power off the DVR and power it back on. 3. Then a few weeks ago, we experienced the Black bar issue (described in 1. above). I checked all the connections and reset (rebooted) the receiver. This time, the only thing effected was the one recorded program we had partially watched. Every time we tried to finish we would get the black bar which would stay until we rebooted the receiver. Once we deleted that program and rebooted the receiver, we have not seen the black bar since. However, when I power down the DVR, the black bar will show just prior to powering off. 4. Now we are experiencing tiling, jumps, lines and audio shutting off. This does not seem to affect standard TV but normally occurs while watching cable channels and is usually more noticeable while recording one program and watching another. Rebooting the receiver seems to fix the issue (temporarily) but it DOES mess up what we are recording. 5. Several times lately, we have turned the DVR back on after being off over night and it automatically comes up with the ON DEMAND programming. It has never done this before and started doing this within the last two weeks. It does not happen every time but is often enough to be frustrating. Anyone have recommendations about what we can do to fix this?

Amazing the number of people that don't think of looking on the DVR for the model number. It's there on all of the Cisco/SA models. If it's a Motorola DVR, then I'm not sure where the model number is located. If not on the front panel, look for a decal (sticker) on the rear panel or bottom.

Hello, I am a long-time Cox user.  I had some issues about one year ago with the HD DVR also. After a tech visited and rechecked the street and home network, it appeared that the signal strength was not quite correct.  I called the Cox cable service for a visit.  The issue has not reoccurred after their visit about a year ago.

Hello

From the sound of your symptoms you may have a very weak signal. Especially since you pointed out only having these issues on the HD channels as apposed to the regular TV channels. Couple of very general things you can try before calling a technical out:

  1. Make sure the cable connection from the wall to the back of your cable box is extremely tight (not the power cable) and make sure the connection into the wall is tight as well. If these are not tightened securely you will have a weak signal.
  2. What type of connection are you using to your TV? HDMI or the Tri RED GREEN BLUE type? If its not an HDMI cable I would suggest using HDMI if your TV allows for it.
  3. It sounds like you are powering down your cable box each night? By powering down do you mean simply pressing the power button on the remote (or on the box) or do you mean actually cutting power to the box completely? I wouldn't recommend doing a complete power cut as these boxes are actually designed to remain on even if its in a state of low power which is what happens when you power it off with a press of the power button on the remote.
  4. From my experience the only time your cable box boots to the On Demand channel is when all power is completely lost to the device, the On Demand show you were watching ends or if Cox pushes an update to your cable box but this doesn't happen as often as you described.   I honestly think you may just be a victim of poor signal and the cause might be local to your residence or from the connection coming into your home. If you are in a area with lots of housing development and new places opening up sometimes this signal loss happens when all those new users come on online and tax the general signal for that area and 9/10 a signal booster or a visit from a well experienced Cox serviceman will take care of it with the tools they have.

Wish I could be of more assistance but a possible weak signal is really in the hands of Cox but if you don't want to wait or would like to try an immediate remedy perhaps a trip to a your local Radioshack, Target, Best Buy and ask for a cable signal booster and see if that works? (Hold on to the receipt incase it doesn't so you can return the item and get your $'s back)
