DVR box

I'm trying to go to the guide on my on my tv using my controller but the box (and/or tv) aren't picking up me pressing the button on the controller. The controller works because I can still turn the tv off and adjust the volume on the tv, andI checked to make sure everything was plugged into the box and the wall. Can anyone help me fix this problem???
