Why doesn't Cox advertise the data usage for their different levels of service. I was NEVER told there was a data limit until I started getting the messages saying we had gone over the limit. I just checked on cox.net at the different internet packages and not one them stated a data limit. What happens if you consistently go over the limit?

Thats somewhat understandable. Cox doesn't heavily advertise their data caps because most customers don't go anywhere near the limit. I have never heard of them hiding the fact though, and a quick google search brings up their Data Cap FAQ easily enough.

That is unusual. Did it happen all at the same time? Or was it a steady incline throughout the day? If you can find out exactly when the heavy traffic started, it might tell you about what it is. Did you get a new router? Printer? Did a friend come over that day?
Also, make sure your router is secure, and if your router has bandwidth monitoring, try using that to isolate what computers on your network are using the bandwidth. Alot of times it ends up being a neibor jumping on your connection for Bittorrent or something similar. Or sometimes its malware on a computer, soaking up your bandwidth as it spreads.
