Data over useage

Suddenly we have gotten 2 emails from COX about data usage is going over. We have done nothing different since the day we came on with COX in 2002. Now all of a sudden we are going over. We have the Premier Package and allowed 300 but have been exceeding it twice in the last 2 billing cycles. Is anyone else suddenly getting these notices after not having any issues for years?  We don't want to lose our internet as hubby works for the Military and needs it for his work.

I got an email like that. I called about it, and they said it was uploading that had pushed me over. I'd never even heard of this problem before then. I certainly hadn't been using it that much, and my roommate says his habits haven't changed. I only got one notice a couple of cycles ago, and haven't had one since.

Hello force113,

I can certainly understand your frustration dealing with data overages and I want to help. There are several possibilities that could be causing this. Make sure that your wireless network is secured. Run virus scanners on all devices that you can. Make sure that you disable any torrents that you may have running in the background. If you stream movies or other video content, you may want to monitor the amount. You may also want to watch your upload if you are hosting a server.

Thanks,

Allan

I get this all the time since joining cox. I work from home, and do not have cable tv, in my house we stream from netflix and hulu. So we are constantly going over our data usage even with the highest plan. I've already pretty much been warned that I might get dropped because of this when I called to see if there's anyway to increase this cap.

up to this last month I had never gone over the Data cap,and I've been a customer for 9 years. Now I understand that we use WWE Network and Netflix now (which we didn't back then) but realistically if we are heading into a time where people run more streaming than ever (I do not use cable and recently got rid of Directv) why not set it up to work with you customers instead of warning them that you could lose your service.

I'm on a budget and couldn't afford to keep Directv, and now I find I only use the internet for like an hour in order to not exceed the cap. Realistically I should ditch the internet all together and use free WiFi from work and the mall.

I see that ATT also caps at 250 GB but they give you additional 50 GB increments at $10...so even if I went into 350 GB territory,it would still cost me less than the highest Cox tier, which I believe maxes out at 300 GB.

I don't understand why a company that supplies internet doesn't want you using it...I got rid of cable and Directv....maybe internet is next

I don't like the tone of the emails either. I have 2 gamers and a YouTube fanatic in my house and I have gotten warning emails about Data Usage.300 gigs isn't much. Leave us alone. I will cancel this $200 monthly bill in a heart beat. .

You want me to upgrade to a business plan to watch Netflix? I should be able to watch the entire series of Breaking Bad without being harassed about data usage. Now i see first hand about Net neutrality.

If you've upgraded to Ultimate and you're still having issue with data allowances our business services unit actually has offerings in the small office/home office category that may be a good fit.  In addition to no stated allowances you also get other benefits like static IP and priority access to service calls as necessary.

I too am getting the emails stating I am over the usage quota.  I do NOT stream any video, Do NOT stream Music nor any other streaming.  I shut my machines down and have low usage for email (primarily).  I have been unable to get Cox to tell me what is the content that is consuming the bandwidth.  I have run virus checkers on all my machines to eliminate that a "spamming" program is the culprit - none found.  some days my usage is under 1 gb and other days it is over 90 gb.  No changes in my usage of my computers.  I just don't understand where this is coming from and cannot get any help.   does anyone have any ideas.  I have noted that there is no response from Cox on any of the posting in this folder.  ??????

I forgot to mention that I have Cox Security.  I don't know if this is causing the streaming.  Again, no help from Cox to date.

From this end we don't have the ability to see what is utilizing the data.  It's analogous to the water company for example not being able to tell you which faucet in your home is leaking.  It does sound like you've explored some of the main possibilities.  I would suggest changing the security keys on your wireless router to account for the possibility it has been compromised and somebody else is using your connection.

What I don't get is if so many people are complaining about the data cap, mind you we are all PAYING customers...why isn't Cox listening? Why won't you guys raise these caps that would have been fine 4-5 years ago?

I have suddenly been showing a huge increase of data usage which is up to 3X what my usage has been for the last year. It started in the middle of last month. I noticed that the amount of data use increases drastically each time the service meter attached to my account is serviced (5 times last month). I live alone, have not changed any of my habits and have only gone over my allotted data use 3 time is the last year and never more than 15 gbs. Why from one day to the next would my usage move to from between 2 to 4 gbs to over 8 t0 12 on a daily basis?

As I was looking at some of these unexplained reports of increased usage another possible cause occurred to me.  While this may not be the explanation in every case I would also suggest exploring further whether or not your router could have been compromised by The Moon Malware vulnerability.  Here's an article describing the bug for those not familiar with it.

Wouldn't it be nice if Cox had instituted "roll over data", much like AT&T wireless?
