Contour Issues

I have had my contour whole home DVR for about a week now.

Overheating:

My DVR6 (main) box after only being on for about 2 hours will post an "overheating" problem and shuts off.  It will return a few minutes later to shut off after another 10 minutes for the same reason.  When it turns on , it is fine and stays on.  The unit is about 2 inches high by 14 inches wide and about 8 inches deep.  The area in is in is about 5 inches high, 20 inches wide, and 20 inches deep.  I note this only to show that it has plenty of room to "breathe".

Remote Issues:

My remote works fine for EVERYTHING, but turning on the box.  I can physically push the button on the box and it will turn on just fine and everything works after that, but on nearly all the boxes, they randomly will power on by the remote.

Rewinding:

My old DVR (from Cox), when you fast forward it, on resuming, depending on how fast you were forwarding, would rewind the video back a minute or so.  This was nice, because you were skipping about 3 minutes per second and couldn't stop perfect, so this "corrected" for you.  The new contour boxes do not do this.  Is there a way to enable this feature?

DVR unavailability:

Sporadically, the boxes will give me "DVR not available at this time" errors.  Why?

Box Reboots:

The boxes randomly reboot. This occurs on both the main box and the clients. Why is this?

Client DVR playback freezing:

One of my clients would freeze and I would have to pull the plug to reboot the box.  I read a forum that said to reboot the main box and then reboot each of the clients.  It hasn't happened since.  But not sure if I need to do anything else or it may help troubleshooting.

The DVR is actually about 2 1/3" high. You have marginal space above the unit, especially if your enclosure has no ventilation holes. It sounds like the heat is building up for 2 hours, then shutting the unit off.

Try using a small 12vdc fan powered by the 5v in the USB port, or a 5vdc fan if you can easily find one.

Are you saying that 2 2/3" inches above the unit is not enough space?

What I am saying is that there are a couple inches surrounding the DVR unit, so it is not like it is in a confined space.  I should not have to use a fan to cool this, I would think Cox would have some better internal cooling device installed and me, as a user, should not have to provide that.  This seems like a very simple engineering flaw.

I was hoping someone had a actual fix for this instead of "put a fan on it".  I didn't not get the contour to have to "upgrade" it, things like cooling should be an automatic.

The manufacturer specifies a minimum of 2 inches. If Cox put anything inside, they would void the manufacturer's (Cisco) warranty.

If your unit is overheating you can (A) try a different unit, (B) try a different location, or (C) try a little air movement. We all know, hot air rises. If it has nowhere to go, it will slowly shut down the unit. All enclosures channel heat differently. Might be that yours does it poorly.

So I am well within all the minimum airspace requirements.  Most all of my boxes, the other client boxes are sitting out in the open and get VERY hot to the touch (well beyond normal ranges), so it is apparent that they run hot to begin with, even when "off".  While I understand about heat and air movement with electrical/electronic components (I'm build all of my own computers), I think this is either a poor design that most people just have to deal with or I have a bad unit.

Also note that in my original post it wasn't just about heat, there were many other issues that were wrong...not just the overheating issue.

Thanks for your help though.

I likewise miss the old back up feature after Fast Forward.  As to the overheating, have you checked your electrical system as to volts and frequency etc?  If "everything" is getting hot maybe it is another issue.
