Cisco 9865HDC IR Remote Input

Today I had Cox Contour boxes installed.  I previously had a HD box with DVR.  Because of the set up of my entertainment center, the cable box has to be in a cabinet.  Therefore, I bought an IR receiver and connected it to the IR Remote Input on the back of the box.  It worked perfectly.

The IR receiver that I used on my old box does not appear to work on the new box.  Page 2 of http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/video/videoscape/multiscreen_gateways/9000/OL-26440-01.pdf lists the IR Remote Input as #7 and states that "....to an approved IR Remote..."  Can anyone provide the name of an approved IR Remote?

If I cannot find one, I will have to go back to the basic HD DVR.

As a follow up....I bought the current IR receiver in Jan 2012 and cannot remember if there was a process to setting it up or if it is simply plug and play.  Does anyone know the procedure?

Hi, most likely the cable box is a Cisco device. It will make a difference in making your selection of an IR Remote. I would begin the search using keywords like Cisco IR Remote.

What was the make/model number of the old DVR?

The "approved by Cisco" IR extender is p/n 1004648. Good luck finding one.

I have been told that the one at http://www.cmple.com/p-165-dual-frequency-ir-receiver-sa-hdtv-dvr-and-directtv-h21.aspx  works fine on the 8642HDC, 8742HDC, 8752HDC, and 9865HDC Cisco DVRs.

PLEASE let us know what works and what doesn't.

this is the IR receiver that I purchased in 2012. http://www.amazon.com/Infrared-Receiver-Extender-Description-Compatibility/dp/B002JSDHCY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413572347&sr=8-2&keywords=ir+receiver

This tech told me that the input was disabled to hinder users from recording movies with a VCR.

What? Wow, the things some reps make up. How would disabling the IR input even accomplish that? I think Domino  already answered your question, see his post above. Or were you looking for a official answer?

Yes. That product works at 38KHz. The Cisco 9865HDC IR works at the higher frequency (57KHz?)

You need the Cisco IRE5712M, p/n 1004648, or the after-market device I mentioned above.

You still have told me what make/model your last DVR was?

I called the Cox tech that installed the new box and he thinks the old box was a Motorala 3400.

Hi Patrick,  I pulled up our spec sheet for the Cisco Explorer 9865HDC High Definition DVR Receiver and the IR port is listed as not active along with the following ports: ethernet, USB, eSATA.

The DCX3400-M is a 38KHz IR device, which is why it worked the the IR device you purchased.

Made not active by whom?

Not by Cisco, it wasn't. In fact, they list the Model IRE5712M, Part Number 1004648 IR extender as an accessory to the unit.

If Cox is going to disable various portions of a DVR, It should provide a note to the subscriber, detailing what functions were disabled and why.

I agree, but this isn't usually how Cox does things. Look at the changes made to the firmware of gateways without any notice to customers. My guess is they disabled everything they don't want to support to reduce the people calling in.

On another note, could the OP use a IR transmitter instead of a receiver?

You mean an "IR Blaster" type of device? Where an IR transmitter is attached to the front panel of the DVR? I suppose, but I sure would be pissed if I spent $30-$40 on a plug-in device only to learn that Cox had somehow disabled that port without notification.
