cable boxes
I know you can get a cable card can I buy my own box and get a cable card vs renting? This was supposed to be an option years ago and no one seems to care. I know their is the samsung one but I want the ability of 2 way communication for on demand ( dont care about the dvr functionality though). Like for instance I go buy a compatible cable box the EXACT same one cox uses.

There are plenty of devices on the market that use cable cards you can buy however boxes are not for sale and boxes purchased through unofficial channels cannot be activated. Note too that if you activate one of our boxes as a cable card device it's functionality will be diminished.

Having looked at that link this policy would seem to apply to customer owned cable card devices. Since the equipment we use cannot be purchased by consumers through authorized channels this policy would not apply here.

I'm sorry to hear you feel that way. I agree however that filing a complaint is the right thing to do if you do not agree with the FCC rules. Should it become possible to purchase the equipment we use through authorized channels in the future we would naturally have to review our policies.

Yeah" authorized channels' more lingo to try and limit consumer access. Sigh all over again like the cable modem issues back in the day. I can see why people are cord cutting.

Don't forget there are plenty of cable card devices available to the consumer for purchase. The FCC rules don't mandate that the cable industry make its equipment available for purchase.

if you think you can please show me a link where a store will sell you a cable box? arris or cisco will not they only sell/deal with cable companies

cable cards dont let you access all the services that we can pay for. You have to rent the box to get it all. I can go buy a brand new box that you use that is for Time warner or comcast and you will not activate it completely because its not a rented box.

Please quote the source that told you that the reason store-bought boxes are limited is because they are "...not activated completely because its not a rented box."

Obviously your the one in confusion since your retreating so quickly. We are talking about consumer purchased equipment. He stated that boxes are not for sale on the market and boxes purchased not through official channels cant be activated . Since their are not official channels to purchased as box that will work on cox 100% it should be easy to figure out you can only rent it..

You can always purchase a TiVo Premiere or a TiVo Roamio, and use those with a CableCARD.
You will even be able to get Cox OnDemand on a TiVo Premiere or a TiVo Roamio in the very near future.

As far as purchasing a Motorola, Scientific Atlanta, Cisco, or ARRIS Cable box, those listed on ebay are all stolen, or were intended to be sent to a recycling facility, none of those are sold or intended for Retail in the US.

Not always true. You can actually buy cable boxes at best buy in locations with comcast. Had to buy one when I was on the coast for a friend last year. Also with Tivo cox contour doesnt support tivio. People on the forum here reporting lots of issues:

So the issue still remains. Customers are not being given an alternative to renting a box beyond a half assed cable card.
