I just realized this when someone sent me a friend request. As part of the request you can send a message. This makes it a kind of private message if you want to tell someone something off the forum. It has to be short(the system shows only so many characters) and you can only do it once, but it's better then nothing.

Yes you can! Which brings up another tip. To ping someone type the @ symbol followed by the user's name. You can't just type @Bruce and copy paste the username. You have to go through the prompt that comes up as soon as you type the @ symbol and click on the username.
I don't think you mean "mention" because I've mentioned you before and you cursed at me for mentioning your name. Like this...don't curse!...widermouthopen (tee hee)
