I just realized this when someone sent me a friend request. As part of the request you can send a message. This makes it a kind of private message if you want to tell someone something off the forum....

Yes you can! Which brings up another tip. To ping someone type the @ symbol followed by the user's name. You can't just type @Bruce and copy paste the username. You have to go through the prompt that comes up as soon as you type the @ symbol and click on the username.
I don't think you mean "mention" because I've mentioned you before and you cursed at me for mentioning your name. Like this...don't curse!...widermouthopen (tee hee)
Mention, that is a good word for it. I will use that for now on.
Click your profile icon and then click "Mentions". This thread will be listed.
How do I get the prompt? I type "@"...and start typing your name...click your name...but it just inserts an object containing your username.
The part where you are clicking your name is what I call a prompt. That object not only acts as a hyperlink to the persons profile but sends a notification that the person mentioned you. You see it in the top right. The little lighting bolt.
