wireless router will not connect

We had to replace our wireless router when it quit connecting to the modem.  We had it for several years and one day it stopped connecting.  I tried to install a new router but it will not connect to the modem.  If I turn off the router, I can access the internet.  As soon as you turn the router on, the internet connection is lost.  Any help would be great!

Hi There,

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with the new router! I had to replace mine this week, too.

Have you called the router manufacturer? There should be a technical support phone number included with the router installation instructions. Since it is brand new, most manufacturers will provide phone support to make sure you get it installed correctly. Here are the phone numbers for the most common router manufacturers:

Linksys: 800-326-7114

Netgear: 888-638-4327

Belkin: 800-223-5546

D-Link: 877-453-5465

If your new router is a different brand and you cannot find a phone number for their technical support department, reply to this post with the brand name. I'll hook you up with the number!

Something else to consider, are you connecting the router to the modem with the modem completely powered down?  If the modem isn't powered down when connecting a different device to it the connection will not be established.  If your modem also provides your phone service push the reset button on the back after connecting your new device.

Cox just started a new wireless service in the R.I. area where you don't need a router anymore. There modem is the router and you get your wireless signal from that which you have to totally confirgure everything diffrent plus your phone line will be on it's on modem from now on! So if you recently purchase a router from Cox  soon you will be hearing your system is being upgrade and they will send you a modem in the mail that has the service for your phone, only your PC and it's a PAIN!

You have to configure your new router if you haven't recieved one yet and eliminate the local connection entirely and where it says wireless, that has to be disabled and your SSID number(USERNAME) and Pass phrase( PASSWORD) will be on the bottom of your new modem / router!

Try resetting the modem.
