Upload throttling to twitch live streaming?

Greetings, Anyone have issues streaming live to twitch.tv? I upgraded to COX Ultimate for the 20MB upload for this purpose. Using the Cox bandwidth test tool I get 20MB. I start streaming and its fine for a bit but eventually starts dropping packets and becomes choppy. Using the COX tool then reveals I am getting around 2MB upload. I originally was attempting 1080p @ 3500 up and even tried 720p @2200 up with the same results. Wait a few hours, reset the modem and I am back at 20MB. I'd call support but don't know if I'd get anywhere.

Where coax comes into the house is a 3 way splitter in the Cox box. The cable modem is on a straight run from the highest output on the splitter. There is no UPS, and I do reset the modem every so often. So I guess there is nothing else to do? If I reset my modem ill likely get 100mb down and 20mb up. After using it for a bit it throttles down.

Mbob,

Are you using the power supply/cable that came with the modem? These errors can also be indications of internal modem issues. How old is the modem?

Modem is not very old at all. Docsis 3.0 and using the original power pack

I do use a surge power strip. I'll get an extension cord instead, in the meantime I just reset the modem and pulled acceptable speeds again. Sun May 10 9:52 AM Yes Down: 129 Mbps Up: 26 Mbps 12 millisec It will remain this way until I begin streaming TV down or uploading to twitch at which point it throttles back down.

Hey mbob,

Did you ever get this problem resolved? I'm having this exact same issue and it's been ongoing for a couple of months now.

For me, the issues always appear around peak times (7:00PM PDT), but we're on business internet with 10MB upload. We went with a business package specifically for Twitch streaming but results are still the same as when we were on residential. Doesn't even matter what ingest server we go to when frame rates drop, as they are all bad according to TwitchTest. Also doesn't matter if we change resolutions or decrease bitrate to 800.

Today I did a speed test while we were dropping frames (with streaming going on) and our upload speed was atrocious. I had to test 2 times just to be sure: 757kbps and 803 kbps. Modem reset did nothing.
THEN I tested again when we weren't dropping frames. I ran a streaming test to Twitch with everything else I was using before and I got upload speeds 6.76-8.71 MB.

I also looked at other streams to see if we were streaming from the same server ... we were, but their stream was perfectly fine.

Clearly my streaming doesn't use up all the 10MB and I feel like my upload speed is being halved during prime time. If anything IS being throttled for us, it SHOULDN'T because we were told business does not have data caps.

We've had 2 technicians come out so far with no results. Phone support is unhelpful. I can call them WHEN we are dropping frames and they simply tell me they can't see anything or help.

Hi kerberos, I haven't streamed anything just yet but I do not buy into it is a power problem as the tech suggested. I was planning on requesting a service tech out to the house but from the sound of your experience it would be pointless. I get advertised speeds until I use it for more then 15 minutes lol.

An interesting note is I occasionally work from home and uploading large vhds into Microsoft Azure never has a problem. I consistently get 20MBps uploading 13+GBs with zero hiccups. There is something in between cox and the twitch servers that is the issue.

Hi mbob, it might be a good idea to have Twitch support run a traceroute to your location. Lets see if there is a comparable issue.

I streamed for an hour last night at 720P flawlessly. Same settings as last week but zero issues this time. Bit rate was 2700
