Slow real time upload speed - conflicting speed test results

I'm experiencing slow real time upload speeds. The speed test on Cox website have conflicting results. I've had 8 techs out to my house over the last 4 months and the issue has not been resolved. I am experiencing the same exact issues as user . We are both in Arizona. Here is his thread. http://forums.cox.com/forum_home/internet_forum/f/5/t/13025.aspx

Since the last techs were out the download speed has increased but the upload speed is still very poor.

Hi Kyle,

I believe I was able to locate your account. I'm sorry to learn of the ongoing troubles you've experienced. I'd like to escalate this to Field Leadership. Please email us your contact number, address, and the link to this thread to cox.help@cox.com.

Thank you,

Field leadership were the last people out to my house. The issues still isn't resolved. Every tech that has been out to my house has discredited the speed test on the cox website. Obviously I'm not the only person who has had this issue.

I am directly connected to the modem and network cable that the senior field tech installed. There are no other programs running and no other devices connected to the modem. Here are my results.

I connected the tech supplied modem to the newly installed line that runs between the pedestal and the outside of my home. I ran speed test and got the same results. Connecting to the line outside of my home eliminates the possibility of issues with the lines inside of the house.

Here are the methodologies between the two different speed test on Cox.com. One speedtest is provided by Speedof.me and the other speedtest.net. The two cannot be compared due to the different methodologies.

SpeedOf.Me is designed to replicate real-world browsing and downloading conditions. You may not compare SpeedOf.Me result with other speed tests. Here's why:

https://speedofme.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/223659007-Why-are-SpeedOf-Me-test-results-different-than-other-speed-tests-

https://speedofme.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/224064107-Can-I-select-which-server-to-run-my-test-on-

  • SpeedOf.Me is a single threaded test while most others (like the one that you have used) are multi-threaded. SpeedOf.Me uses a single connection to download the sample files which is closer to what users actually do in their everyday browsing and downloading.
  • Muti-threaded test are heavily adjusted. They usually estimate (and not calculate) your speed. (See this: http://goo.gl/72DmZ4)
  • SpeedOf.Me utilizes CDN (with super-fast Terabits connections) to host its sample files which is not comparable to regular servers with limited bandwidth
  • SpeedOf.Me uses native browser capabilities (HTML5/JavaScript) not third-party plugins like Flash or Java which have their own overhead
  • SpeedOf.Me has a unique algorithm that cannot be tricked by PowerBoost or similar speed enhancement tools

In short, the results you get with SpeedOf.Me are more accurate and representative of your actual Internet quality.

  • Test server is chosen automatically. Unfortunately you cannot change it manually.
  • SpeedOf.Me hosts its sample files on CDN. It benefits from 59 (and counting) super servers called PoP. Each PoP may utilize several servers. They are located in various places around the world near primary Internet exchange points. These super servers have a massive computing and caching power and are directly connected to all the major backbone networks. When the test is started, the quickest and most reliable server, not necessarily the nearest, would be chosen. There are many factors involved in selecting the best test server for you. However, it is done automatically using CDN technology to ensure the best testing quality.

The Ookla Speedtest.net results are not accurate when checking for speed problems. The reason is the slowest 30% of the download samples are then discarded. The upload samples are sorted by speed, and the fastest 50% is averaged. So if the lower 30% of my speed and 50% of the slowest upload speeds are discarded it may not show in the speedtest.net results. Therefore it is irrelevant when testing for slow speed issues.
