Sketchy hardware
I have Cox hardware. It is the cable modem and wifi all in one unit. Can it be replaced with my own hardware? My wifi goes down at least once a day, and the unit has to be reset. If I don't notice that it is down, the phones and tablets in the house switch to LTE and use up data. Anyone got a decent solution for this?

Cox doesn't make hardware, but they do sell/lease it. You can also use any device on this list, and any wireless router, as long as your not trying to plug a router into a gateway.
When the wireless goes down, are wired devices effected? Have you checked for wifi interference?
