Scientific Atlanta 3250 & Essential Lineup

I have the TV Essential package/bundle (Cox San Diego North).  I do not have any "Cox Boxes".  I have an HDTV.  I can get the HD channels from the TV Starter plan straight off the cable, but not the HD channels listed in the TV Essential package.  Do I need an HD receiver like the Scientific Atlanta 3250?  Can I buy my own?  If I rent or lease one from Cox, is there an additional charge?

In order to receive all the TV Essential channels (both SD and HD) requires the Advanced TV Package and an HD Set-Top-Box or renting a CableCARD.

Advanced TV is an additional $3/mo added to the Essential Package price

Renting a Box from Cox:
An HD Set-Top-Box from Cox is $8.50/mo (probably the Cisco 4642HDC or SA 4240HDC)

Retail CableCARD devices:
You could also rent a CableCARD, from Cox @ $2/mo (the SDV Tuning Adapter is provided free)

Then purchase the Samsung GX-SM530CF Smart Media CableCARD Set Top Box

Another option would be to purchase a used TiVo Premiere with Lifetime Service on eBay they are currently selling for $300-$400.  Many TiVo customers have upgraded to the new TiVo Roamio, that is why there are so many for sale.

Thank you very much for your response!  Actually, I already have a Tivo Premier (2 tuner).  I'll investigate the procedure for obtaining a cable card.  Hopefully, I can accomplish my task without the need for a service call.

How are you currently using the TiVo Premiere?  OTA only?
Do you currently have TiVo service?  Monthly or Lifetime?

Both a CableCARD and Tuning Adapter can be picked up at a Cox Store and you can do a Self Install.

Yes, OTA only.  That's because I used to have a 32 inch Vizio and didn't care about HD.  Now I have a 50 inch Samsung and HD looks fantastic!  I have the Tivo monthly plan ($14.99).  After I posted my last message, I called Cox and ordered a Cable Card.  They're shipping it out 1-day FedEx!  Should be here tomorrow (2-27-14).  Stay tuned.  Get it?,,,,,Tuned?

Don't forget that with TiVo and a CableCARD, you'll need to add a tuning adaptor to receive SDV transmitted channels, and you won't have access to VOD (free or pay) or PPV. So is it really worth the $6.50/month difference between getting a CableCARD versus an HD receiver from Cox?

Prior to installing the CableCARD you should Re-Run Guided Set-up on the TiVo to download all the new channel line-up info. If you still plan to use OTA you can select Antenna and Cable, The Premiere will combine the two channel line-ups in the Guide. or choose just Cable, if you are going to remove the Antenna.

To Activate and Authorize the CableCARD and TA, Call the following number: 1-877-820-8202

CableCARD Self Install Instructions- Cisco

Should you need any assistance with the Cisco Tuning Adapter I posted the following:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=482537

The Instal Sheet Cox supplies with the Tuning Adapter shows using a splitter and MoCA POE filter, Both of which you should not need with a 2 Tuner Premiere,  Use the following older Install Sheet instead, Read the above liked info for more.
