problems with Internet after upgrade to Premier

we have recently upgraded our Internet to Premier [yes!] Netgear CG3000D-rg. Right after that I noticed that Internet periodically very fast [the way it should] and sometimes it just stops. For instance, it could load google in a heartbeat but in next 2 minutes could take much longer to load it again. I used traceroute on Netgear to check whether it's related to a specific site and noticed that nearly for all sites I tried traceroute to after about 6-7 hoops there is a huge delay. I am wondering if this is related to my modem or may be a technical issue elsewhere. Thanks.

I don't think a router would cause a delay on the 6-7th hop but its hard to tell without looking at the data. Could you paste the tracert here? Also, what are your signal levels?

I don't know how/where to get "signal level".

Oh thats good. Sorry I was talking in slang. What I meant was the signal levels of the cable modem. And it looks like I already answered your question over on the DSLR forums. LOL Thats funny huh?

Anyway, The first trace seems to show the highest latency between Hop 8 and 9. It leaves Cox's network by Hop 6, so anything after that is beyond Cox control. In Fact, since it gets to University of Arizona's servers by hop 8, hop 9 would be internal to the Colleges network. Probably a bandwidth issue with their ISP if I had to guess.

Second trace shows what looks like a congestions problem on XO's CDN servers that host CNN's video services. So I'm not sure how that relates at the ISP level. I mean it could be a peering issue, but I doubt it. Maybe your noticing the small delay when powerboost kicks in? Or maybe the gateway has less throughput? How did you have your network before the Netgear?

this is all very very weird! Internet works in chunks, i.e. sometimes it just kicks the *** out of speed, sometimes it takes minutes to load a simple page. I checked your link where you answered another person - there is no option to check signal level [neither it's mentioned in the manual nor I could find in when I log in to the modem itself]. I am probably looking for something you didn't ask :-)

At any rate, I called Cox Tech support. They reseted my modem on their end it worked fine for about 10-15 minutes. Then again - too fast, too slow, not at all and so on. I even tried ethernet connection thinking that my laptop may be having some wi-fi issues. Nope. Same story.

ANother traceroute shows that XO communications having some issues.

I used to have very old Scientific Atlana 2100 modem before I upgraded my Internet. It couldn't obviously support the speed I am currently having. But it worked pretty steady. I don't really know WTH is going on :-(

Ahh, perhaps your right. What do you have plugged into the Netgear, Something with a 172 IP range maybe? Maybe that has the gateway of 192.168.0.1 and thats causing a conflict. What does it say on the page of your 192.168.0.1? Like what manufacture?

I am not sure where exactly to look. On 192.168.0.1 it says NETGEAR residential Gateway CG3000D-RG and bunch of technical things such as modem MAC address, cable MAC address [why do we have two MACs here???], hardware version, etc. There is nothing plugged into my modem except for co-axial cable. It has a Wi-Fi function in it already, i.e. no additional stuff.

It is interesting that I thought before upgrading my Internet service that I should probably buy my own modem+wifi router. But then I decided to purchase the one Cox sells [a bit more expensive] assuming that they wouldn't sell something that doesn't work.

I finally found that signal strength :-)

This looks very good to me. What do you think?

Under even the best conditions, Wifi N300, the wireless the gateway has, will give you about 30-35Mbps. So if your getting the 50Mbps your probably not going to see it wireless of that gateway. To get 50+Mbps you would nee a N900 or even a Wifi AC router to see that kind of speed wireless.

Also, your signal levels to the cable modem isn't very good. You need to check that out first. Check out how many splitters you have between where the line comes into the house and it goes into the modem. You want to have your power level atleast +- 10dB and a Downstrean SNR of 36. The older modem was a older design and could work off weaker signal. DOCSIS 3.0 has tighter restraints to get the added performance.

The signal levels look within a normal range [so I was told]. The problem I had was solved - I just replaced the modem. It now works the way it should :-)

Thank you for your help!

Who told you those signal levels were normal? A Cox Technician? If so sounds like maybe he wanted lunch early. ::chuckle:: The problem is probably going to come back. Hope Im wrong though. Good luck.

here is my source

Downstream SNR should be >30 ---- mine is 33

Upstream power should be lower than 55 --- mine is 46.7

My downstream power is low though.

I sure hope you're wrong :-) So far [the entire day] Internet is download 60 Mbs / upload 30 Mbs and is very steady.

See here. The source you quoted is the older DOCSIS 2.0 signal standards.

Hi Tiffany,

thank you for your reply. My modem is connected directly to the wall with any splitters, power strips, or UPS. Like I said in one of my previous messages I exchanged Netgear for Cisco. Internet connection is very stable but the signal levels are the same. I guess I need a technician to look at that. I will e-mail my request using email address you kindly provided. Thank you.

Maxim.
