Poor connection speed

I am getting under 5Mbps on a 50Mbps connection.   Can you advise on the cause?.  I checked and it says I have the most current modem.

How are you testing your speeds? Can you copy/paste the results if its from a speedtest site?

Are you testing wired or wireless? For troubleshooting purposes, its best to test wired first, and direct to the modem if possible.

Speaking of which, what modem/gateway and router do you have?

I used both a commercial site and Cox site tool.

I tested wireless and wired thru router.  When I connected my desktop direct to the modem it says no connectivity.

I have a Cisco dpq3212 phone/cable modem and Cisco M20 router

Wirelessly I have 5mbps, wired I see I do get 46 mbps

Then the bottle neck would seem to be the router, or more specifically, the wireless connection between your device and router.

How is your wireless signal? Is it 5Mbps right next to the router?

Also, what kind of device(s) are you connecting to the router? Almost looks like a Wifi G connection at about half strength. I wouldn't expect more then 30-40Mb wireless though.

Also, reason you weren't able to go online direct to modem is each time you change the Ethernet connection (from router to PC) you need to reboot the modem. Normal modem you just unplug/plug the power cord, but a phone modem has a battery. You either have to take the batter out or use the reset button on the back above where the cable screws in. Warning, this will stop your telephone for a couple minuets. That is assuming you have Cox telephone.

Gotcha.  This is an iPad air, right at router

Hmm, probably the newer Ipad Air is having to connect to the older router in a compatibility mode, slowing it down. When your right next to it, do you get full wifi bars? Do the bars ever disappear or drop drastically?

Also, what kind of router do you have? There doesn't seem to be a way of telling how a Ipad Air is connecting to a wifi network like you can on a PC. Another words, we need to know if its connecting over Wifi G, Wifi N, Wifi AC, and at what rate, 10Mbps/54Mbps/100Mbps/etc. Trying to find the weak link in the chain so we know where to focus our attention on improving.

Hi Mikey,

It sounds like you were on the right troubleshooting path before your first post, and Health Edge's suggestions have helped to highlight the network bottleneck. Please let us know if we can help with further questions!
