Out of sync issue

I've been having issues with an out of sync audio and video using HDMI. I currently am using the Cox Cisco HD box and that replaced a Scientific Atlanta box. I've had quite a few techs out here to find the issue. Here is what has been done:

I replaced my TV with a new Visio E420-A0

The cable box has been replaced.

The HDMI cable has been replaced twice.

All fittings have been replaced.

All cables have been checked for ingress.

Issue started after an outage about 3 months ago.

Audio falls behind video and as much as 2 to 3 seconds behind. The longer I watch a channel the longer the delay. I checked for firmware updates on the TV but it is a brand new set and no firmware updates are available.

This happens primarily on ch 1047 and 1057. I don't get the issue on other channels.

The last tech that came out replaced the HDMI cable with component cables. The issue hasn't returned using those cables but I'm not holding my breath.

There has to be something that can be done. Most information I found talks about the video falling behind the audio but nothing for the other way around.

RCraig,

1. Just telling us "ch 1047 and 1057" is nice, but we all have different programming on those channels. What programming is on those channels?

2. Was your TV replaced after the "outage" ? Was your cable box replaced after the "outage"? Sync problems on HDMI but not component outputs is usually due to a damaged HDMI circuit. [I assume this was an AC power "outage" and not just a cable outage.]

Any other equipment involved that you didn't mention? (AC surge protector, AVR, etc.)

Everything started happening after the outage. I installed my new TV, the cable box was exchanged and all visits by techs occurred after the outage. I've now had component cables connected and been playing channel 1047 (Fox News) all day long and the out of sync issue has not come back. Based on that the HDMI from the cable box must not be working correctly. I'm assuming a firmware update is in order. Oh, by the way 1057 is Animal Planet.

No surge protector, no AVR, no HDMI switch. Just the cable box connected directly to the TV with HDMI. (Now component)

Odd. I'd try borrowing a different make/model TV. I've never had a "cable box" (still don't know if it's a DVR or not) deliver your type of "slowly worsening" sync issues, but I have seen various issues on Visio TVs. Not as bad as with Westinghouse, but bad nevertheless. But since it happens on only two channels, that points back to the box. Very odd...

This is not the first TV that I see this problem on. I had it on another TV which was not a Visio. I experienced the same issue with that TV connected. Again, everything has been either replaced or serviced ouside of a different firmware on the box.

Again, odd. Assuming this "box" is a DVR (you still haven't said), I'd ask to exchange your Cisco 8420 with Passport for a Cisco 8642/8742 with Trio (or vice versa.) What model number is your present box?

Currently I have a Cisco 4642HDC. It's not a DVR it's a standard HD box.

Pardon my ignorance, but does your 4642HDC run on Passport, or does it have Trio?

It's running Passport.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a Passport update on Cisco equipment. You didn't mention it directly, but I assume that you have tried a cold re-boot of the STB. Try leaving it unplugged over night. Let it complete it's boot after you plug it in the next morning. You might even ask Cox to re-push Passport to your box.

Also, what kind of population density in your area? Do you have a close-by neighbor with HD that you could ask to try those two channels? If it isn't the box, the TV, or the connecting cables, it's got to be something that the outage damaged in your node. Good luck with that!

Finally, you could always try upgrading to a 8642HDC or 8742HDC DVR with Trio (nice 16:9 IPG.)  Maybe Cox will give you a sweet deal for your troubles.
