Netgear CG3000D-RG Constantly drops wireless connection, internet does not work

I have to reset it when I wake up in the morning and then I reset it again when I get home from work. The wireless signal will go off and on by itself and the LAN connected laptop loses its internet connection. If I do not restart the modem at least 2 times a day it does not work. I can sit here and watch the wireless signal light disappear and then reappear 5 to 10 seconds later.  Anyone have ideas on how to have the internet consistently work?

So after I got home from work, had to reboot modem to get the internet to work again. Then at around 9:30pm I got booted from my wireless network and when I reconnected my internet speed was less that 1mb according to speed test so I had to turn it off and back on again to get back up to 20mbs. CenturyLink starting to look better and better every day.

I'm having the same problem and it looks like there are a lot of COX customers having this same problem.

Update:

Thank you Scott Pickett for setting up a service call with a real Cox employee instead of a contractor.  After 3 visits from End2End with each doing one little piece that did not fix my problem of slow speed, I went to the Cox store and talked to Scott about my frustration - he made sure my next appointment was with a Cox specialist who had experience in all systems.  I have Cox Phone and Internet only.  Scott (from the COX store) also replaced my 1 yr old modem (it had a 2 yr warranty) with a new version and confirmed my appointment with a Cox repair technician.  James discovered that I had an old phone modem that could have been interfering with the internet signal coming into my house. It also could have been the internet modem, but when the End2End technician did a test from the tap with a brand new modem the slow speeds continued, so I figured it was not the internet modem.  James the Cox repair person replaced the phone modem and the internet modem and I have not had throttling down to slow speeds for 3 days now.  I'm a much happier person. Thank you Scott for saving a Cox customer for 8 years.

At least I am not alone then, too bad it ** for all of us. Have you found any type of fix yet?

The signal levels look fine for the modem and there does not appear to be any packet loss or latency that we can see to it. There are some errors in the logs for T4 time outs which would be tied to transmit issues and if constant enough can cause the resets. To check when the connection drops are your computers and wireless devices still showing connectivity but no internet access or a local only status? Or do they completely disconnect when you notice it saying no connection or network?

Edward,

The wifi light on the modem starts blinking and then disappears and on my wireless devices I am booted out of the network. Then, sometimes it will connect back to the network and not have internet access, other times it will not be able to connect back to the network at all.  The only fix is to turn it off and then back on, I doing it 4 to 5 times a day now.

Try to look at the wireless network before and after the problem. If you right click on your wireless network and then click status, it should give you some information like radio (B,G,N,etc),band, channel, etc. What it says depends on your adapter and OS, but try to see what, if anything, changes after the disconnection, because thats probably what is causing your problem.

Most routers have auto-scan features and dynamic rates and a lot of other features that allow it to adjust to the wireless environment around it. I find a lot of routers will have problems informing the wireless clients of changes to the wireless network in real time, as the router adjusts. So if you have alot of neighbors around you with other wireless networks, your router may be adjusting itself, and each time it does, the wireless devices lose connection. Some of it is trial and error, but if you can find out what change is triggering the disconnection, it will help isolate the issue.

I use inSSIDer 3 so I can see what is going on. I changed my channel selection from Auto to Channel 1 b/c I had 5 overlapping networks. On channel 1 I only have 1 overlapping network, all the other channels are worse. I am on 802.11 n at 2.4ghz and it says my current signal is -31 dBm. I know after I reset the modem my link score is in the high 80s and right before the wireless signal goes out my link score is in the low 50s. I think this Netgear modem just **, that is the problem.

inSSIDer is good. Sounds like you know what your doing and I agree with your conclusion.

I changed out my original Motorola SUrfboard modem because they (support) said that would fix the problem NOT, now several times a day my signal drops either wired or woreless and 5 minutes later it comes back. I am seriously thnking of sending a bill to cox for time wasted waiting for the signal to reappear so I can finish my work.  When the connection drops I am showing connectivity but no internet access.  Seriously thinking of going somewhere else but do not know if it would be any better to be honest.  We all pay alot of money for good service and signals but I think both are seriously lacking at this time.  Yeah I am upset and getting tired of it quickly.

I see the same behavior on my CG300D-RG. I've had two other modems (through a different provider) without any issues, so I know it's not environmental (interference).

Hopefully there's a firmware update in the pipline...

From this end I don't see anything obvious that would explain what is happening in your situation.  Do you also see problems with wired connections?

I now have to turn it off and on 5 times a day, 7am, 12pm, 3pm, 7pm and 10pm is usally what happens. You can see where it is real slow and then I reset the sorry excuse for a modem and how it is fast again for a little while. But soon after I reset it, it already starts to slow down again. If nothing gets better by the end of month, just going to drop service and go over to Century Link.

I would ask for a upgrade to the CG3000v2.

I am having same problem. Don't know if it's Cox or the Modem. My speeds were at tops 29 mbps up & 5 Mbps down. They sent out a Tech and he checked everything and said that this was the best I could get as Cox was in the process of converting from analog to digital and it would be about a year before they got to my area with the digital. I am paying for 50 mbps down & 10 mbps up. Waste of money.

In a last attempt, I ditched the Netgear CG3000D, bought a Motorola SB6141 modem and a Netgear Nighthawk 7000 router and installed them yesterday. Speed has been between 25 and 32 mb/s and I have not had to reset anything yet, also no wireless drops and I get a stronger signal.

Crossing my fingers but looks like it was just the CG3000D I bought from Cox, lesson learned on that.
