Motorola SBG6580 modem lacks upstream Channel Bonding and hangs on video play/page load.

I just bought a SBG6580 to comply with DOCSIS 3.0.  Pages don't fully load.  Videos won't play.  Workflow is worse than DOCSIS 2.0.

Here are the Error messages in the Router Log.

Upstream Channel Bonding is not working:

Upstream Bonded Channels
Channel Lock Status US Channel Type Channel ID Symbol Rate Frequency Power
1 Locked ATDMA 3 5120 Ksym/sec 36100000 Hz 36.5 dBmV
2 Locked TDMA and ATDMA 1 2560 Ksym/sec 23300000 Hz 36.5 dBmV
3 Locked ATDMA 2 5120 Ksym/sec 29600000 Hz 36.5 dBmV
4 Not Locked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV

Current firmware version is:

SBG6580-3.5.8.4-GA-00-505-NOSH

I've twice been promised a firmware upgrade and nothing has happened. On tech rep said he reviewed the version I have and noted there was a later revision that addressed upstream bonding problems.  Another said COX does not provide firmware upgrades, in direct contradiction to Motorola, who says they legally can't upgrade firmware -- the ISP has to.

The connection was 'flushed' and the account re-provisioned. Power cycled, all the usual suspects.

The setup is straighforward.  Cable to the router, no DTV splitters or signals, no other equipment attached to the router other than three client hardware via wireless IP.

Despite significant speed increases in SpeedTest, the behavior of the system, particularly with pages that have, say, and instructional video, is worse.  Pages hang.  Load times vary.  Videos don't play.  Mail takes a long time to poll my servers.  FTP is impossible unless I turn the firewall OFF, something I'm not keen to do.

A ticket was made out, promises made and nothing has been done.

The issue of getting the wireless router to work well with clients was solved by turning off IP Flood Detection in the Firewall section.

I expect the Router to be the first line of defense, but it seems to only operate for FTP and other tools I need to do my job when the Firewall is off and there is no means for specifying a port to be opened for a service explicitly.

Do you have data on the symptoms? Are you seeing packet loss to the gateway? Latency?

Also you might want to try running wired from one of the computers to the gateway to compare to see if the issue is the WAN>LAN or LAN>WLAN.

Last, try setting a static DNS on one the computers and see if that helps(8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). If throughput is good but video streaming is not, DNS is the first thing that comes to mind.

This is the latest firmware number I can find.  I don't know what should be in there. All I know is that a tech-support person named Michael, ID 5621, told me in a phone support session that he was looking at my modem from his end and there was a firmware upgrade available to solve 'channel bonding issues'.  He asked if I wanted the latest firmware and I said yes.  First thing I do with a new modem and no one at COX until I talked to him claimed they knew how to make it happen.

I will examine the wiring, including outside the house and report back.  Cables and connections are the source of most problems and as a tech myself, I take care to have solid ones.

Will look into booting MAX OSX into safe mode and see what happens.  Don't know how that affects upstream channel bonding, but it's worth understanding what difference there may be.

Thanks!

Advise me on utilities to check packet loss and latency on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and I will check both and report.

Wired is slightly better in overall speed test, operational behavior is the same.

Have set a static DNS in one of the client computers to 8.8.8.8, followed by the top two DNS servers recommended by Nametest, which turn out to be COX name servers.  Will advise.

Thanks, guys.

Got more support faster in a couple of hours than I got in days trying to talk to Tech Support.

Setting a static DNS of 8,8,8,8  (Google's free DNS) as the primary was a big help.

Here is output from the DNS tester set up to utilize COX recommended DNS servers:

Your ISP's DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain names which should not resolve. Instead of an error, the DNS server returns an address of 92.242.140.2, which resolves to unallocated.barefruit.co.uk. You can inspect the resulting HTML content here.

There are several possible explanations for this behavior. The most likely cause is that the ISP is attempting to profit from customer's typos by presenting advertisements in response to bad requests, but it could also be due to an error or misconfiguration in the DNS server.

The big problem with this behavior is that it can potentially break any network application which relies on DNS properly returning an error when a name does not exist.

The following lists your DNS server's behavior in more detail.

  • www.{random}.com is mapped to 92.242.140.2.
  • www.{random}.org is mapped to 92.242.140.2.
  • fubar.{random}.com is mapped to 92.242.140.2.
  • www.yahoo.cmo [sic] is mapped to 92.242.140.2.
  • nxdomain.{random}.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu is mapped to 92.242.140.2.

A handy set of tools (although Windows-centric) is at:

A good tool for checking the ISP connection is at:

http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/

After switching to 8.8.8.8 for primary DNS, video delays and page hangs went away.

Also you have the standard Network Utility for Pings and Traceroutes. See here for more info. But it sounds like if DNS helped its not a latency issue.

Also, would these video be Youtube videos(and only Youtube)?. If so you could be experiencing a much wider issue effecting alot of people.

The videos that have the largest problem were those on YouTube that had a commercial in front that you could skip after 10 seconds or whatever.   Also any reasonably complicated website that makes a lot of external calls for content would halt.   All went away when DNS was changed.   I had been using 8.8.8.8 on my old settings, reverted to COX DNS when I installed new WiFi router.

Knock on wood., everything is zipping along as best the internet can for my level of service.

Can stream video or audio to several devices at once.

Web pages load more quickly than before, on average, about 50% faster, commensurate with speed test results.

Netalizer shows several problems with COX as primary DNS that go away when I use Google.

Give it a day to settle and I'll bet the problem is solved.
