Technically I would need to know what tier of internet you are subscribed to in order to provide the most accurate answer, but http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=b2ec95d0-7ef9-11df-5590-000000000000 lists all of the modems supported by Cox and the highest compatible package for each modem.
I hope this helps!

Personally I would purchase a separate cable modem and wireless router to avoid a single point of failure scenario.

Yes, and I'd like to know if I need to upgrade my Arris TM502G needs an upgrade. The tech who installed it said it was more than I needed, but it's been a while.

What modem are you replacing? I ask because those models are actually gateways, not modems, so they have intergrated wireless and firewalls which might conflict with any separate wireless router you have.

Looking at your current services I'd say it's definitely time to upgrade. The Arris 502's belong to Cox so there is no charge to swap it at one of our solutions stores for a more current model.
