Modem and Router Question
I presently have Preferred Cox Internet. My download today is 11.60mbps and my upload is 5.29mbps, which seems very low to me. I also am getting intermittent internet for the last day and a half.
I have presently have installed a Linksys SB5101 Modem and a Linksys WRT 54G2 Router, both 3 or 4 years old. Would upgrading this equipment possibly increase my internet speed? Currently there are 2 desktop pc's running Windows 8.1 x64. Both internet adapters are 802.11 a,b,g,n dual band. Also, would like to know, which would work best, a Modem/Router combination like Ubee DDW366? Or a separate Modem like an ARRIS/Motorola SB6141 along with a separate Router?

Short answer: Yes - Motorola SB6141 and Asus RT-N66u
Long answer: Your modem caps at about 23-25Mbps under best circumstances and the wireless G on your router is about the same, so thats a bottle neck. You should be getting about 32Mbps, but that number will increase to 50Mbps by the end of the year so upgrading before then is suggested.
However, I DO NOT suggest getting a gateway. I know its tempting because of the price tag, but I have seen so many issues on this forum with most gateways. The one I have heard the least amount of bad stuff about is the Netgear CG4500BD. This should NOT be confused with the other Netgear Gateways which are more or less junk. Not saying the CG45000BD is better then a separate modem/router, but if you HAVE to get a combo from Cox, I would suggest that one.
Also, check to see if your renting the modem. If so, you may be eligible for a free upgrade, depends on your area. That would free up funds for a better router.

Thanks for reply, Health Edge. I was leaning toward the Motorola SB6141 and you answered my question about the router. Appreciate your insight regarding the speed and alert about the end of next year. Really a helpful reply - thanks. I do not rent the modem presently, so will probably purchase both after comparative shopping. Thanks again.
