I have been viewing local HD channels on my Sharp digital TV for over 5 years. Last week I got a "No broadcast" error. I tried rescanning but they are no longer there. I called Cox support and was told I needed a digital receiver to view local HD but this is not correct - the Cox website says TVs with QAM something can received these channels without a digital receiver.
Can anyone tell me why I lost my HD channels? I recently downgraded from premium to economy but the channel listing for the economy package lists the local HD channels.

The answer may be different depending on where you live.
1) If you were not paying for Cable TV and only Internet, Cox may have placed a filter on your line.
2) Your area may have already moved to an All Digital, All Encrypted signal, which means you now need an HD receiver or Cox Mini box or a Retail CableCARD device to receive any channels.

Thanks for the reply. I am paying for cable TV and the local HD channels are included in the package.
I checked the Cox website and my market (Ft Walton Beach, FL) has NOT gone all digital yet.

By chance do you know if your TV's QAM tuner support QAM64 or QAM256?

Many of our markets have begun the process of switching to an encrypted all digital video network which will require that boxes be used. Feel free to email us at cox.help@cox.com so we may review your account. I believe we still have some campaigns to help with some of the costs associated with this change.

You now need to rent a box for every tv. It is a way of raising your rates without having to file with the local PUC.

Hi Chris,
Did Cox change something where QAM64 vs QAM256 would cause me to lose my HD channels?

We don't think there have been any changes, but we're checking on this for you. Can you give us a few examples of channel names and numbers to which your TV can no longer tune?

Hi Becky,
The channel numbers lost were 1003 through 1010 and 1012 through 1023. These are included in the TV economy package for the Fort Walton Beach, FL market. My zip code is 32548.

I see you've attempted a channel search with the TV to detect the QAM HD channels. We're investigating if there have been any frequency changes. Usually when that happens it would display a black picture. Have you attempted to reboot the TV for a minute and rescrew the coaxial cable? Attempt another channel scan to see if the QAM HD channels are detected.

no. you are not missing a thing!
and if you get a mini box, and you've been paying for cable with cox, watch out for a $15 "self activation kit" charge...
for the pleasure of renting a mini box & installing it yourself!
i got mine reversed. but i had to trade boxes today (the ones made by "evolution" are junk (might as well downgrade my own adjective, they will just censor it). so i'll have to watch...i'm sure there will be another charge! make sure you get a cisco.
or you will have all kinds of other problems!

My HD channels are back.
I did nothing to the TV or the cable connection. I just tried rescanning (again) last night (almost four weeks after they disappeared) before pulling the TV off the wall and checking the cable connection on the back.
This tells me the problem was on the Cox side.
What is so frustrating is the lack of support from Cox for this problem. I pay over $1000 a year for basic TV and "high" speed internet. But when you're a monopoly you can get away with blowing off your customers' problems.
There's going to be a class action lawsuit against Cox some day and I want to be a part of it.
