Lag spikes every minute or so, please help!

Since I've gotten my new router lag spikes started popping out of no where, they are VERY frequent and are very annoying, especially while playing online games.  

Here's a test for my ping I did a couple of minutes ago.

The highest was around a 100, which to me, a 100 is VERY acceptable, I used to have a 100 ping before and it was normal, but the lag I'm getting in games do not feel like a 100, more like a thousand. 

Please help, I've tried restarting my modem but that did not work. I've also had this going on for about a week.

I am having kind of the same issues, my ping is great (normally between 7 and 15) But my up and download speed **. I play online games on my Xbox One and get lagged out all the time. Have you tried doing a speed test on Cox or speedtest to see what it says?

Yes I did try a cox speed test and it gave me a 30 mb download and  9 mb upload. 

This is very annoying and I hope to get it fixed soon, I tried looking up help for 3 days but no hope.

It's very annoying I know. And having the tech's out 5-6 times hasn't helped me either.... I pay for 160Mpb and barely get close to half of that during the hours of 5:00-10:00 in the pm..

Hi Emerald,

I understand you're having trouble with lag playing games?  Are these PC or console games?  If they are PC games, we can have you run ping and trace route tests to the game server IP.  This will help us determine where on the network the lag is taking place.

I am VERY sorry for this very late reply, I was very busy lately.

Yes Derrick, and this lag is not with just one game, it's with all online games. And yes they are PC games.

Some instructions on how to do that would be awesome, thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated.

These are some good instructions in Blizzards website. Just fill in your game's server or IP if it's not a Blizzard game. 

Windows

  1. Click Start and type CMD in the search field.
  2. Right-click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  3. Type tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > c:\tracert.txt and press Enter. Replace the x's with the appropriate server address.
  4. Allow several minutes for the trace route to complete.
  5. A file will be created inside your C: drive called tracert.txt that contains your trace route information.
  6. Type exit and press Enter to close the command window.

I did exactly what you said but the command prompt is empty and doing nothing after I press enter, should I just wait? Because it seems like nothing is happening.

Looks like the main issue is between your computer and router. Are you on a wireless connection? Notice how t he first hop is taking anywhere from 1ms to 14ms? Here is mine for comparsion. I would suggest connecting direct to the modem, reboot the modem,  then the computer and try again. BTW, LoL?

Thanks for the quick reply, and yea it is League. 

You're right it is wireless, but my older router was wireless and it didn't do this before. 

So do you suggest I make it a wired connection? Because my room is pretty far from the router which makes it very hard.

Yes, if possible. The worst wired connection is better then the best wireless connection. But if it isn't possible, the latency may be fixable. What kind of router do you have? Some are better then others are isolating the signal from other networks and sources of interferences. Anything from bluetooth to microwaves to your neighbors Wifi. What kind of router do you have?

unfortunately I believe a wired connection will be impossible, I really don't see why this is happening with my new router, my old one had 0 problems.. 

Anyways, the router is a netgear.

I asked for the model number. I assumed you were a fellow nerd since you seemed like a gamer. Did you mean a Netgear gateway CG3000?. If so, and your renting, ask to trade up to the CG3000v2 or CG4500. Or even better yet get a SB6141 stand alone modem and RT-N66U/R but thats more money. Gateways are cheap, and you get what you pay for, the latency of the wireless CG3000 is flaky. I can only be frank with you, don't game wireless on it. Either upgrade to a different gateway, or buy a seperate modem and router, doesn't even have to be from Cox. Newegg.com is a great place to start Let me know I can help, but I can't turn lead into gold.
