IPv6 info

I had some trouble getting IPv6 to work so I figured I would post my experience. It is working as of now (Dec 2016)

Cox uses DHCPv6-PD (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6 with Prefix delegation).

For this to work, your router needs to accept incoming connections to udp port 546 on the IPv6 firewall rules. Setting the rule on the IPv4 firewall does no good. This allows the DHCPv6 server to send configuration to your router.

From there, your router will get an external IPv6 address and should assign the prefix from the DHCP server to an internal interface and advertise it to your internal network.

At that point, devices on your inside network will have globally routable IPv6 addresses if they are configured to use IPv6.

Given that, you should look at adding appropriate IPv6 firewall rules on your router if you intend to use IPv6 on devices on your inside network.

I should add that I'm in southern Arizona, Cox's deployment of IPv6 might not be the same everywhere.

IPv6 isn't always fully implemented nor is it implemented uniformly on all consumer routers in my experience.  YMMV

This may be true, but it doesn't help the customer when they ask for help and Cox responds with "It should just automatically work" which is the response I got from first level support. They asked me if I could wait for the next level support and I declined.

At that point I looked at the traffic on the wire and found the DHCPv6 offer with a prefix, so I set my router accordingly.

Most modern routers should be able to handle this by now, although the ability to do separate firewalling for IPv6 traffic might be a stretch for consumer devices. If it's not available, IPv6 probably shouldn't be used by the end user.

There are plenty of more advanced devices and firewall software that do this if the skill level of the user is sufficient.

Probably there should be a list of preferred devices for IPv6 use. I don't know what they are.
