How will Cox set the CCI flags in Phoenix Metro after the "All Digital" transition?

Cox is transitioning to all channels encrypted in the Phoenix Area shortly.  But they may also be changing the "Copy Control Information" (CCI) flags on the channels as well.  These flags tell network equipment, such as non-COX DVRs (Tivo, HDHomeRun SageTV, MythTV) what channels they can or cannot record on their "DVR".  They can be set to "Copy Always", "Copy Once", or "Copy Never".

Right now, most if not all of the Clear QAM channels are effectively coming in as "Copy Always", which means DVRs can record the channels.  But most DVRs CANNOT record the channel if the CCI flags are set to Copy Once or Copy Never.

Those of us who have non-COX DVRs are beginning to understand that we will soone be losing the ability to record the channels that are now transmitted in Clear QAM.  But many of us MAY have a solution to that problem by getting a Cable Card Cox and using that Cable card with our DVR.  The CableCard will decrypt the channels so that our DVRs can record them.  That is - unless COX sets the CCI flags to "Copy Once" or "Copy Never" on many or all of their channels.  If those flags are set, my understanding is that non-Cox DVRs will not record them.  You can only watch "Copy Once" and "Copy Never" shows live or with a Cox DVR.

My worry is that as Cox transitions to "All Digital" and "All Encrypted", they may also be transitioning to "All Copy Protected".  That would be a huge disservice to many of their customers.

So to conclude my story, I'd like to make a request of Cox for me and all of their other Phoenix area non-COX DVR users.

REQUEST TO COX:

Please provide information for every channel in your lineup that will tell us customers what the CCI flags will be on that channel once the "All Digital" transition occurs.  i.e. for each channel, tell us whether that channel will be "Copy Always", "Copy Once", or "Copy Never"

Thanks

The All Digital transition should not have any effect on the current CCI byte. (It would be nice if Cox would ease up on the Copy Once usage, but I don't see that happening.)

Locals should still be CCI=0x00 Copy Freely

Everything else will most likely remain CCI=0x02 Copy Once

Both CCI=0x00 Copy Freely and CCI=0x02 Copy Once CAN be recorded with any DVR that is CableLabs certified,

TiVo and Windows Media Center (Win7 Win8.1)  are the only CableLabs certified DVR solutions that can currently comply with CCI=0x02 Copy Once.

Good information Brian.  Thanks!

Anyone from Cox who can confirm what Brian has said?  Will the 'locals' be "Copy Freely"?  Will 'everything else' be "Copy Once", or are some of them going to be set to "Copy Never" (such as HBO)?

I still think a listing of every channel and what its CCI flag is going to be would be helpful.

Thanks!

And Brian, do you have a CableCard in your HDHomeRun PRIME?  If so, which DVR software are you using with it, and which channels can you currently record on that DVR?

Nothing will ever be set to Copy Never or No More, (unless by mistake) The Cox DVRs are subject to the same Copy Protections,

If a channel was ever set to Copy Never CCI=0x03 or Copy No More CCI=0x01, the Cox DVR could not record the channel either.

Yes, I use a CableCARD in my HDHomeRun PRIME and I currently use Windows 7 Windows Media Center.  I don't use my HDHomeRun PRIME much any more, and I will probably upgrade my PC to Windows 10, so I will have to shelve the HDHomeRun PRIME unless SiliconDust can get thier HDHomeRun DVR software to support Copy Once (Protected Content) I am not holding out much hope though do to the latest news from SiliconDust.

"Protected channel support has been quite a frustration. We have live TV working in our Windows Universal app for Windows 10 however we can't release it because Microsoft does not allow a Windows Universal app to request/verify HDCP operation (required to meet the protection requirements). We are investigating a workaround which we think has a reasonable chance of working but is consuming time and resources."

"Protected channel support on Android is nearing release. We will be releasing live TV support first,"

Hi BB,

Bryan's info is correct. Unfortunately, we do not have access to a list of channels and their CCI flag settings.

Because Cox doesn't want to be responsible for keeping them up to date. Luckily I live in RI where FIOS competition is good enough that Cox keeps CCI flag open here. Its why we have such a loose cap too.
