Email problem

All of a sudden (despite long session with cox rep which did not solve the problem) I am unable to send email from my computer. I can receive but not send.

An error message indicted an internal error and said to contact my ISP which I did and followed all instructions successfully. What now??

What exactly is the error?

Also, what outgoing (SMTP) settings are you using/?

I am having the same problem and it just stated on the 22nd.  The message says the SMTP is offline. I have port 587 in the configuration.  I am running on a Mac pro.  My wife's computer can send email so I think it must be with the mac.

@bigart Are you accessing the account and trying to send through Mac Mail or with another email client there? Also is the account setup on any other devices?

Can you copy/paste the message exactly? Or show a screenshot?

What SMTP server are you using?

Can you include the rest of the settings? Password authentication? SSL? Etc.

Last, what are you using for your client?

I used "Grabber" to copy the info but could not seem to paste it.  This is what is says:

Cannot send message using the server cox.net

The SMTP connection to server "smtp.cox.net" failed.

cox.net (offline)

It also says that I should be able to edit smtp server list.

Thanks

Click here for a walk-through how to check your SMTP settings in Mac Mail. Let me know if you use something else. Notice the picture in step 2; under account information, what do you have for server name? Under advanced tab, what settings do you have? Sounds like you are using different authentication settings on your computer then your wifes, so maybe we can just change that.

tecknowhelp -

Following your instructions this is what I saw -

incoming - pop.cox.net

outgoing - (smtp) - cox.net (offline)

port - 995 ssl

auth - password

I have been able to send emails through cox webmail and gmail so I'm thinking it is a problem with the mac mail software.

I am not sure how to read this. Almost looks like your smtp server is set to cox.net, which is wrong. Should be smtp.cox.net, but perhaps something is lost in the copy/paste. Could you take a screenshot?

Also, port 995 is used for inbound/POP. What do you have for auth and port for outbound? Windows 7 and above should have Snipping Tool, or CTRL+PRTScn then paste into paint and drag+drop to imgur.

Boy, Cox really fixed this, didn't they?  More like just totally ignored it.

I too am having this problem.  On my Mac OS X 10.10.5, I can receive email from Cox but cannot send it.  I can login to Cox Webmail using the same account / password and send from there, and have been doing so for a while.  My outgoing SMTP settings are:

Although the dots don't show, I have entered a password into the password field.  In the Mail Connection Doctor window, the message is:

If someone can review them, I can provide the log files.  They are not comprehensible to me, but someone must be able to understand them.

FYI, to get Screen/Window shots in Mac OS X, use the instructions from Apple: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18798?locale=en_US

Try just having your username dklaus2 instead of dklaus2@cox.net for your username in picture 1 and make sure you enter your password there as well. I think the main change to the apple client is it started requiring SSL, which requires authentication, and many people have their outgoing authentication info wrong.

Also, try port 587. Port 465 is for SSL, but if the client is trying a TLS  handshake, the server might be rejecting it. 587 uses TLS by default so may work better.

If that doesn't work. Try clicking on "Show Detail" and "Show Logs" for more info on why the SMTP server is denying the authentication.
